THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN STRIKES OF THE RED "40" IN CIRCLE RATING HANDSTAMP.

The "40" rating handstamp was used on transcontinental mail sent at the 40¢ rate.

Large margins to just in at upper right, slightly oxidized, clear strike of red Hudson River Mail wavy-line grid in circle cancel; tiny corner margin crease at bottom left, Fine and scarce cancellation, One of the few fancy designs used during the 1847 period., with 2011 P.F. certificate.

1963 o    1 image1847, 5¢ red brown. Enormous margins all around with framelines of adjoining stamps at top and left, intense shade, criss-crossing pen cancellation, remarkable and Extremely Fine, ex-Mirsky.

There are a total of 31 criss-crossing lines in this pen cancel, which would have required significant time to apply. This stamp was obviously cancelled by a postal clerk with lots of time on his hands and a deep desire to prevent re-use.
