1582       imageFine Hearses, Geo. L. Brownell. Illustrated ad showing hearse carriage on cover bearing 1¢ gray blue (206), nat. s.e. at left, tied by "New Bedford Mass. Mar 13" duplex with quartered cork cancel, Very Fine, with 2004 P.F. certificate.

George L. Brownell was established in 1843 in New Bedford. He had a substantial factory and began making hearses in 1853. While specializing in fine hearses, coaches and undertakers' wagons, the firm also manufactured light (family) carriages of every kind. In 1863, George Brownell purchased the Cannon Street/Acushnet Avenue premises (mentioned on the cover) to expand his plant. It became one of the largest such factories in the country, employing between 50 and 100 men.

As it could be adapted to a wide variety of languages, it became one of the most widely used systems in the world. It was his brother, Benn, who popularized phonography in America.
