George L. Brownell was established in 1843 in New Bedford. He had a substantial factory and began making hearses in 1853. While specializing in fine hearses, coaches and undertakers'
wagons, the firm also manufactured light (family) carriages of every kind. In 1863, George Brownell purchased the Cannon Street/Acushnet Avenue premises (mentioned on the cover) to expand his plant. It became one of the largest such
