In October 1865, the newspaper rate to Sweden by the Bremen-Hamburg mail was 3¢, apparently the 2¢ prepaying was accepted as fully paid. In October 1865, the newspaper rate between rate between Hamburg and Sweden via Denmark was reduced from 9 öre to 6 öre.

The stamps were purposely placed to the left to cover the preprinted "per Closed Mail via London & Ostende" endorsement for Prussian Closed mail service. This cover was prepaid 38¢, short paying double the 21¢ per ¼ ounce rate by French mail. The short payment was apparently paid in cash or accepted by the New York exchange office, which struck the proper 36¢ credit cds for double-weight letter by French mail via British packet.

The letter was properly paid for the 28¢ Prussian closed mail rate, but must have weighed just over ½ oz. Since 2 x 28¢ = 56¢ had not been paid for this route, the New York exchange office clerk sent the letter in the Bremen mail at two-times the 15¢ Bremen rate = 30¢ rate and accepted the 2¢ short payment. The New York marking shows a credit to Bremen of 2 x 12¢ = 24¢.
