'City of Baltimore', Augst. 10th", no U.S. markings and apparently carried privately on Inman Line City of Baltimore from New York Aug. 10th to Liverpool arriving Aug. 22st, reverse with "Liverpool, U.S. Packet, AU 22, 61" cds, matching "1/-" one-shilling due handstamp for packet fee, London N.W. (8.22) arrival cds.

If the letter had been entered in the U.S. mails, it would have been placed in a closed mail bag marked for London and off loaded at the Queenstown stop, thus saving a day to London.

New Orleans fell to the Union on April 25th of this year, accounting for the use of the "Via United States" directional handstamp. The New York exchange cds is unusual with the year designation that Winter lists as #42 from only 1862 and 1863. The same cds without the year designation is recorded from July 14th 1862 to June 18th 1868.
