AN EXTREMELY RARE TRANSATLANTIC PACKET HANDSTAMP THAT WAS USED ONLY ON THIS ONE SAILING (MARCH 1, 1819).

The 424-ton James Munroe was among the first four ships in the Black Ball fleet. The Canadian War of 1812 50% surcharge was discontinued in April 1819, making this a very late use.

Datelined folded letter from the Rusehenberger correspondence addressed to care of American Consul at Canton, bold "Bridgeton N.J., Jul 31" cds and matching "Paid" handstamp with manuscript "10" rating to F.R. Smith at Philadelphia Pa., the enclosure reveals that the letter will be carried out of the mails from Philadelphia to the American Consul at Canton, Very Fine and early use to China.

The addressee, William Samuel Waithman Ruschenberger, M.D. (1807-1895) was a surgeon for the United States Navy, naturalist and author. He wrote several works based on his service in the Pacific and along the coast of South America. He commissioned with the U. S. Sloop-of-war Peacock in 1836, and accompanied the second mission of diplomatist Edmund Roberts to Muscat and Siam, subsequently fleet surgeon of the East India Squadron 1835-1837.

A SCARCE STEAMSHIP VOYAGE VIA GREAT BRITAIN FROM AUSTRIAN LOMBARDY TO THE UNITED STATES.

Under 1831 Franco-Austrian Postal Convention, France was entitled to 65 centimes per 7½ grams letter weigh (approx. 71 Austrian centesimi) for transit from Austria through the Kingdom of Sardinia to France. The Austrian internal fee that had to be prepaid was an additional 40 Austrian centesimi for the 42 km from Milan to the Sardinian border. "F.C." handstamp in red applied at Milan to indicate letter paid to the Kingdom of Sardinia border. The letter, as endorsed, was placed on a sailing packet at Le Havre for New York.

"Columbia" was the last of the original four wooden, side-wheel paddle steamers with which Samuel Cunard start the operations of his line in July 1840. She was 1,175 tons and built at Greenock in 1840. She ran aground and was wrecked at Cape Sable, Nova Scotia on July 2nd 1843 without loss of life.

Letter marked one penny in red ink for British inland fee in error and then marked 1 shilling for the packet rate. Liverpool transit octagonal datestamp on reverse has the code letter "D" at the top, a scarce version of the uncommon octagonal marking. Less than a half dozen examples have been recorded and they were used for a three week period from December 1841-January 1842.
