Estimate  $3,000 - 4,000. A RARE 5¢ 1847 ISSUE USAGE ON THE FIRST SAILING UNDER THE NEW U.S.-G.B.TREATY TO GREAT BRITAIN. The specific provisions of the US-Great Britain Treaty took effect with this February 21st 1849 Cunard sailing from Boston. The 5¢ stamp was insufficient to pay the treaty rate of 24¢ to Great Britain as it had to be either fully prepaid or fully collect. No partial payments were recognized and therefore, the 5¢ stamp was wasted and the letter was rated 1 shilling due. It is probable that the new rates and requirements of the treaty, which had just been announced, were misunderstood by the sender. Although the division of the 24¢ (1 shilling) postal rate had been agreed upon, the accountancy handstamps usually seen on later transatlantic mail covers were not put into use at this early date. Estimate  $300 - 400. According to Winter, the manuscript "80/4/2fl5" probably adds up a number of other letters paid for at the same time maybe to the same village. This accounting for multiple letters is not usually seen on other Wurttemberg mail. (Image1)

This is an unusual cover that was originally franked with an additional 5¢ stamp to pay the 35¢ rate via Prussian Closed mail, but after postmarking and prior to processing in the Portland exchange office, the postal clerk removed the 5¢ stamp and the letter was prepared for the 30¢ French mail rate. The red crayon "27" credit to France for 12¢ transatlantic packet to France (considered British even though Allan Line contracted to carry American mails) plus 15¢ foreign transit fee to Russia. There is at least one other recorded Pierce correspondence use, dated Oct 9, 1865, from Portland to Russia with a stamp removed originally intended for P.C.M. but sent by French mail. This cover is discussed in "United States-Russia Mail:1840-1875" by Winter, Chronicle 242, May 2014, pp. 168-187 as fig. 23. (Image1)
