Feb 15 1860" cds, addressed to John S. Cripps in care of the Legation of the U.S., flap with "Forwarded by You obt. svt., J.T. Pickett, Vera Cruz, April 13th" manuscript forwarder's notation of the U.S. consul; left 3¢ rounded corner, Very Fine and interesting U.S. consul forwarded use. Estimate  $400 - 600. Gen John Thomas Pickett was U.S. Consul from 1853 to 1861, and held many officer commissions on missions and engagements in both the U.S. and C.S.A. When the "Southern War of Rebellion" broke out he was appointed the Confederate Commissioner to Mexico. He served as Asst. Adjt. General C.S.A. army on General John Breckenridge's staff. In 1863 as Secretary of First Confederate Peace mission and 1864 - 1865 as Special envoy extraordinary to Mexico arranging escape of CSA officials. (Image1)

Jul 11" cds, red "New York 'Paid 3' Jun 14" credit exchange cds ("Jun" used in error), carried on North Atlantic S.S. Co. Adriatic from New York Jul. 14th to Havre arriving Jul. 24th, blue Havre (7.24) arrival datestamp that is an unusual color for this marking, Le Havre a Paris (7.24) and Nantes (7.25) arrival backstamps, Very Fine; with 1999 P.F. certificate. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. A RARE PREPAID EXAMPLE CARRIED ON THE 3RD OF ONLY 7 VOYAGES OF THE NORTH ATLANTIC STEAMSHIP COMPANY. Formed in 1859 for the New York to San Francisco route the North Atlantic Steamship Company purchased three of the steamships of the defunct Collins Line. Unable to gain the San Francisco contract, they used the best of the vessels, the "Adriatic" to run the Atlantic to Havre via Southampton.The Post Office agreed to contract the company for the value of the sea and inland revenue of mails carried. The line however only operated six round trip contract voyages in 1860 and ceased at the outbreak of the Civil War after one further eastbound voyage. (Image1)

'Paid' Jun 9" cds with inverted date and day slugs, then held back and additionally franked with the use of this style of Vera Cruz postmark. is uncommon and 1¢ blue (9) single, margins to slightly in, tied by blue "Charleston S.C. 'Paid' Jun 19" cds, endorsed "pr. Steamer via New Orleans", clear "Vera Cruz / Jul 10" boxed two-line datestamp and matching "4" reales due rating handstamp, Fine and intriguing item, the use of this style of Vera Cruz postmark is uncommon. Estimate  $300 - 400. This cover is part of a correspondence addressed to Gen. Gadsden while he was entrusted with the mission of ending the incipient boundary dispute with Mexico. They are all postmarked from Gadsden's hometown of Charleston S.C. Agreement was reached in 1854 between Gadsden and General Santa Ana of Mexico, whereby 45,535 square miles of disputed territory should be ceded to the United States, in exchange for which the United States paid $10 million and further agreed to abrogate all claims for damages due to Mexican raids on the American side of the border between 1848 and 1853. Scott No. 4LB8  Estimate $200 - 300. Charleston had only the government approved carrier service in the South. In 1849, John H. Honour was appointed the first letter carrier, and he continued until he retired in 1860. There was soon sufficient demand for the service to occupy two people. Honour had several typeset stamps printed through the years, and the stamps were sold directly to the public. Initially called "Honour's City Express", later it was referred to as the "City Post" or "Penny Post". His successors continued on during the Civil War but not use stamps. (Image1)

Jun 11" cds with matching "Paid 10" circled rating handstamp, matching blue "Louisville Ky. Jun 26" cds and bold "Due 3" overstriking the paid marking; some repaired opening tears at top, otherwise Very Fine, Census No. SLU-10; 1974 C.S.A. and 1975 P.F. certificates. Estimate  $10,000 - 15,000. A RARE AND ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE "SOUTHERN LETTER UNPAID" HANDSTAMP USED TO CANCEL A U.S. 3¢ STAR DIE ENTIRE. ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED FROM CHARLESTON S.C. United States postal entires used from the South (and postage stamps affixed in the South) were regarded as contraband and were refused as prepayment. On June 24, Dr. J. J. Speed, the postmaster at Louisville, was advised to forward letters from the South to the loyal states after removing postage. With approximately 5,000 such letters accumulating at Louisville by this date, Postmaster Speed employed a more practical means of invalidating postage by creating the "Southern Letter Unpaid" handstamp. According to the census in Special Routes, there are 29 "Southn. Letter Unpaid" covers recorded in the Special Routes book (No. 25 has been deleted as a fake since publication). (Image1)

Drayton, U.S. Navy, Philadelphia; missing flap and couple small top edge flaws, F.-V.F., This is the last day the U.S. Post Office operated in South Carolina as it seceded from the Union on the following day.. Estimate  $300 - 400. Although the original letter is not here, this was sent from Tom Drayton to his brother Percival, who was a unionist who stayed in the U.S. Navy throughout the War. This shows that blood ties were broken in many places throughout the U.S. as family members literally chose sides. (Image1)

4196   imageConfederacy, Charleston S.C. Jan 19 1861, cds on cover with matching circular grid cancel tying 24¢ gray lilac (36) on cover addressed to Capt. George Pyke, Ship 'Genl. Packhill', Liverpool, England, charge box notation, reverse with partial New York "Br. Pkt. Jan 23" exchange cds and red "19" cent credit handstamp, carried by Cunard Line America from New York Jan. 23rd to Liverpool arriving Feb. 4th, Liverpool (2.5) arrival backstamp; no flap, top edge faults and soiling, Fine. Estimate  $200 - 300. The ship "General Parkhill" with Capt. Pyke at the helm left England for Charleston, S. C. on the, left the Mersey on the 25th ult.: The crew consisted of first and second mates, boatswain, steward, and eleven seamen. It appears that the ship had not got far down the river when some angry words took place between the captain and crew, and two of the crew were flogged. Shortly after they attached the captain and first mate, killing the former and terribly wounding the latter. The vessel was carried back to Liverpool and the crew were arrested. Captain Pyke was a native of Preston, England, and was about 34 years of age. He was a married man, with a family. (Image1)

Interesting content concerns censorship, "…a great many of the letters from the north were opened here, likewise those sent from here to the north too, for the purpose of finding out the correspondent of the Tribune who took such particular care & pleasure in writing the most palpable lies about the state of things in our so-little-understood city of Charleston…".
