Cannon was one of the more famous Mississippi steamboat owners, he raced his Robert E. Lee against Thomas Leathers Natchez from New Orleans to St. Louis on a number of occasions. Although Cannon did not hold a contract until 1875, he was running as a sub-contractor to A.S. Mansfield between 1866 and 1870 on Route 8106. (Image1)

Whitman, Steamboat Agent, Bayou Sara, La., /76" to Oxford Ga., put onto Route 30096 to New Orleans where transferred to the Great Northern Mails via Mobile and Atlanta to Oxford on the Atlanta to Augusta Railroad, Very Fine. Towle No. M-15-m  Estimate $150 - 200. In the four year contract period July 1875 to June 1879, two separate contracts ran on the New Orleans to Vicksburg route. Leathers, Tobin and Cannon for Route 30093 at $33,000 a year with twice a week service and on alternate days Matthew Draper at $27,000 a year for three trips a week on Route 30096. This appears to have been a unique arrangement for this route. (Image1)

4107   image(Route 8166) New Orleans & Memphis Packet T.P. Leathers, red oval handstamp on buff envelope from the Carroll Hoy correspondence to New Orleans La., red "New Orleans La. Jan 5" cds and black "Steam 5" rating handstamp; usual filing holes, Very Fine. Milgram No. 1378  Estimate $500 - 750. "T.P. Leathers" of 435 gross tons was built at Memphis in 1852 and registered there February 6th 1852. Owned jointly by her Master Capt. Charles Pierce and James Boro. Burnt at Natchez January 10th 1853, salvaged and re-registered in New Orleans in October 1853. This cover was therefore carried on the last down river voyage prior to the fire.In 1858 Route 8166 was advertised for bids for a three times a week service. The contract was awarded to the Memphis & New Orleans Steam Packet Company at $76,000 per annum. The high value of the contract related to the transfer of the Southern Mails to a route from Washington via Memphis to New Orleans. (Image1)

The "Gipsy" of 298 tons was built at Louisville, Kentucky in 1848 and ran the New Orleans to Bayou Sara trade under Capt. James H. Ure. Eggen, Clippert. Milgram No. 1301  Estimate $600 - 800. The "St. Charles" of 311 tons was built at Cincinnati in 1850 for Samuel Applegate and others for the Red River trade. From this cover it is probable that Applegate ran her to St. Francisville. Contracted by the trip, Route 6102 connected the port for St. Francisville (Bayou Sara) with New Orleans between 1849 and June 1858. (Image1)

All mail carried on them was charged by the sheet and mileage, the only exception being Bills of Lading. Milgram No. 812  Estimate $400 - 600. Marston owned plantations on the Mississippi River and the Clinton Bank. A native of Massachusetts and opposed to slavery, he may have been trying to help escaped slaves. The "Louis D'Or" was a 343 ton steamboat built in 1860. (Image1)

Three steamboats named Music were in operation on the Mississippi between 1843 and the Civil War. Two were built for Ferdinand M. Shreck who acted as their Master. This was the first "Music" of that name of 198 tons built at Jeffersonville Ind. in 1843. This "Music" was sold to Capt. Celestin Dalferes of Assumption Parish, La and was off the lists of registered vessels by 1849. (Image1)

We have been down to Vicksburg on a little excursion but before going any further I will give you a little account of the trip, I do not remember the dates but never mind. We left Helena and proceeded down the Mississippi when we arrived at the mouth of the Yazoo we started up the river having gone up that river about fifteen miles we disembarked but had not gone more than a mile before we came in sight of the rebels earthworks here we stopped and waited until the rest of troops disembarked when Gen. Estimate  $1,000 - 1,500. AN IMPORTANT EARLY PRE-REGULATION LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN STEAMBOAT LETTER. By 1820, steamboats were operating on Lake Pontchartrain to both Mobile via passage into the Gulf of Mexico and to Madisonville on the estuary of the Tchefuncte River. Although it was not until June 1834 that a route across Lake Pontchartrain was contracted, letters were being carried privately the 36 miles from the landing on the southern shore of the lake to Madisonville as early as 1821.The writer, Thomas Shield is reporting to General Morgan of his visit to Pensacola Fla. during the period of the first Seminole Wars. General David Morgan was a soldier who served in the Louisiana Territorial legislature, member of the Constitutional Convention, commanded the militia of Louisiana and Mississippi under Gen. Feb 11 1858" and matching "Steam" straightline handstamp, Extremely Fine, ex-Clippert. Estimate  $300 - 400. A CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THIS SCARCE BLUFF CITY MARKING. When contracts for Route 6000m ceased in about 1853, it was some five years before new contracts were made for Route 8285 at $50 a round trip. This letter was carried four months prior to the first contracts on Route 8285 and struck with the "Steam" straightline. (Image1)

Milgram No. 641  Estimate $750 - 1,000. Route 8285 was used during periods when the post roads were impassible for coaches. The route operated from July 1, 1858 to May 31, 1861 when it was annulled with the secession of all Post Office contracts in Southern States. This "Indianola" was built in 1859 for the Bayou Macon trade on the Ouachita River and sold to the Red River Packet Co. in 1860. (Image1)
