220   imageVernon (Cal.), Sept 22 (Sutter), manuscript postmark (SUT-900, R5) and "5" manuscript rate marking on stampless folded letter sheet to California Governor John McDougall at Vallejo, forwarded from Vallejo to San Jose with "Vallejo Cal, Sept 30" manuscript postmark and "ford 5 / 10" additional manuscript rate, Very Fine, a very scarce early California town, ex Nathan. Estimate  $200 - 300. This folded letter is datable to 1851 since John McDougall became California's second state Governor on January 9, 1851, and he held the office until January 8, 1852. One of McDougall's early acts was to sign legislation authorizing the relocation of the state capital from San Jose to Vallejo, which occurred officially on January 5, 1852. The state capital moved again to Benicia in 1853 and finally to Sacramento in 1854. (Image1)
