James Bassil, Egyptian Army, Grand Cairo, Egypt, franked with 1873, 3¢ green + 7¢ orange vermilion, horizontal pair canceled by light quartered cork handstamps, red New York exchange cds and various crayon accountancy markings, reverse with Bridinsi transit and Cairo receiving postmark, with original 4-page enclosure with interesting content regarding events at the fort and Indian problems in area…It is just possible that the hostile attitude of Mr Lo. in various parts of the county may stay the already whetted axe and uplifted hand already to send the fatal blow. One officer & some men so far - Lt. Robinson - have been killed by the Sioux. I believe, the Hualapi Apachi in Arizona appear to be on the eve of an attack; repaired cover nick at lower left edge and backflap refolded to show stamps, F.-V.F. appearance, a wonder usage to Egypt from Fort Garland. Lupton, C.T., Sep 15/65, manuscript postmark tying 1861, 3¢ rose (s.e. at right) on small cover to Springfield, Ill.; stamp with pre-use crease, Very Fine, one of only a few known postmarks from Fort Lupton, illustrated in Jarrett's Colorado book. Estimate  $300 - 400. This early fur trading post was established in 1836 on the south side of the South Platte River. It was revived as a stage stop on the road to Denver and obtained a post office in January 1861 while still part of Nebraska Territory. It became part of Colorado Territory the next month. (Image1)

The Georgetown post office was officially established June 19, 1866, with William H. Gray the first postmaster. This particular cover is in the hand of the first postmaster and was posted within six months after the post office was established. (Image1)

It had been reported that due to unsatisfactory performance the office closed and it's duties assumed by the post office at Booneville. T., Jul 10, clear double circle date stamp and matching target handstamp canceling 1861, 3¢ rose on cover to North White Creek, N.M., 1865 docketing at left; cover slightly reduced at left a bit into stamp margin, a Very Fine strike, this postmark is from the second period of operation, 1864-1866. Estimate  $300 - 400. During the territorial period alone, the Julesburgh post office opened no less than six times. The first was May 29, 1860, while still Nebraska Territory, closing in September 1862. At this time it was a station on the Overland Trail and Pony Express routes. It reopened January 20, 1864, the town of Julesburgh was completely destroyed by Indians in 1865, and the sporadically operating office was renamed Fort Sedgwick May 3, 1866. (Image1)

Estimate  $150 - 200. By this time, the "H" had been dropped from Julesburgh. The Julesburgh post office operated simultaneously with Fort Sedgwick from August 1866 to August 31, 1868, when it was again closed. It reopened April 8, 1869 and was closed yet again November 27, 1871. (Image1)

738   imageJunction House, C.T., Jany 25, manuscript postmark tying 1861, 3¢ rose on 1865 cover to Fair Haven, Vt.; cover slightly reduced at right, Very Fine, the earliest of two recorded covers from this office. Estimate  $1,000 - 1,500. The Junction House post office was located just west of where Beaver Creek meets the South Platte River. Only a month after it opened in December 1864 the office found itself encircled by the Arapaho, Cheyenne and Sioux raids which followed the Sand Creek battle. Beaver Creek stage station, five miles away, was burned on January 14, 1865, and on the overland road stage stations and telegraph lines were destroyed for 75 miles down river, all the way past Julesburgh. The Junction House post office became Fort Morgan on July 16, 1866. (Image1)

Estimate  $750 - 1,000. The postmaster at Missouri City was another, who when ordering a handstamp, apparently wrongly guessed that the area would remain a part of Kansas. By the June of 1861, the "Kans" portion of this device was chiseled out of the postmark while awaiting the new "C.T." postmark. (Image1)

Estimate  $150 - 200. Beginning in May 1865 and for much of the summer, Indian depredation along the South Platte River prevent regular mail services to the east. Mail was sent west on the Overland Trail to California then east. Therefore a 10 cents Trans-Mountain rate was charged. (Image1)

772   imageMuddy Creek, Col., May 12th 73, manuscript postmark on fresh cover to Lancaster, Pa., franked with manuscript canceled 1870, 3¢ green, with lengthy and interesting original enclosure datelined from Grinevas Ranch regarding receiving mail at Muddy P.O. rather than Greenhorn, cattle branding and…Kit Carson the famous Indian fighter figured in this immediate vicinity. Have met his sister in law & been shown the scene of some of his exploits. The Ute tribe of Indians are nearest to us about 50 miles away. They are not hostile at present but there is talk of a general Indian outbreak during the coming summer., mentions party of 150 Ute at Pueblo selling Buffalo skins, beaver and mink in the Grinevas river, etc.; cover slightly reduced at left, Very Fine, the only recorded postmark from this town. Estimate  $300 - 400. From Pueblo, the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad continued to build south reaching Trinidad in 1876. Muddy Creek was a stage station and rest stop until the railroad bypassed the town. (Image1)
