The letter reports the establishment of an American steamship line from San Juan, Nicaragua via Manzanillo to San Francisco. The first northbound steamer called in at Manzanillo on 13 July 1856 and returned on the southbound leg on August 12. The letter further proposes sending 'dollars' (pesos?) to N.M. Rothchild's San Francisco branch at a 'good rate of exchange'. Most of the bond issue was sold to European interests, with Whitehead acting as selling agent.
