1804   imageConfederacy, Petersburg, Va./Aug. 27 (1861), cds in blue with matching handstamped "PAID 5" on clean cover addressed to Asst Surgeon Chas M. Morfit, C.S. Navy, Portsmouth, Virginia; missing back flap, Very Fine and choice, scarce Confederate States Navy use made all the more desirable by the medical connection, ex-Hambrecht. Estimate  $300 - 400. Dr. Charles McLean Morfit (1838-1925) received his medical degree from the University of Maryland in Baltimore and became an Asst. Surgeon in the U.S. Navy in 1861 but resigned the same year to join the C.S. Navy in the same capacity. He served on numerous vessels - CSS Ivy, CSS Arkansas, CSS Stono, CSS Albemarle, CSS Oconee, and CSS Chickamauga. He was also captured and imprisoned at Old Capitol Prison and Fort McHenry. 1813 11 imageConfederacy, Union (West) Va./July 23rd (186)3", manuscript postmark on cover franked with manuscript cancelled 1863, 10¢ blue (margins a bit irregular), addressed to Dr. Tomlin Braxton at the Winder Hospital in Richmond, cover shows some overall soiling and two old tape stains, the lower left corner of the cover has been repaired involving just a small part of the address only, Fine appearance, a very interesting CSA usage from Union West Virginia, ex-Thayer. Scott No. 11  Estimate $150 - 200. Union is in Monroe County which was incorporated into the Union State of West Virginia in June 1863. Cover is dated about one month after West Virginia was admitted to the Union as the 35th state and therefore shows CSA usage from Union territory. Either the Union, West Va postmaster continued to operate the CSA mails for a time, or more likely that area of Monroe County may have been under a brief CSA occupation. Surgeon Major Tomlin Braxton (born 1832 and a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1854) was the regimental surgeon for the 19th Va. Inf. early in the war and later had service as a medical officer with other units. He was captured as a POW at Kanawha (West) Virginia in May 1862 and was confined briefly at Camp Chase until released in June 1862. (Image1)

Thomas to his mother in Augusta, Ga., each tied by blue Norfolk, Va. cds, each with original enclosure datelined from Pig Point (defenses along the Nansemond River on the south side of Hampton Roads), first letter of January 3, 1862 mentions "Humphrey Marshall's army" in Kentucky, second letter of January 30 contain interesting war preparation details about Burnside's North Carolina campaign…I hope your fears about the Burnside expedition are groundless and I hope instead of being in Pamlico Sound the ships are at the bottom (of the ocean) with mention of the storm, third letter of February 21st with interesting content…Our iron clad war vessel (the scuttled Union Merrimac, raised and rechristened the Virginia by the Confederates) is now finished and lying in the stream at Norfolk ready to come down the harbour. Greatly detailed bio included from the unpublished biographical register of physicians who served the Confederacy in a medical capacity., ex-Hambrecht. Scott No. 2b  Estimate $200 - 300. Dr. Francis Thornton, Jr. (1827-1863) was born in Virginia and received his M.D. from University of Louisville in 1850. He served the CSA as Surgeon in Ringgold, Ga; Chattanooga, Tenn; Atlanta, Ga; Rienzi, Miss; and Gainesville, Ala. In his CP article, Hamrecht recounts how Dr. Thornton was transferred to Foard's Hospital in Chattanooga. During the night of May 31, 1863, two drunken men, one of whom was a nurse at the hospital, went to Dr. Thornton's house and insisted that he give them some "medicinal" whiskey. He ordered them off and when he followed them out the gate, one of them stabbed him with a knife. He died a half hour later. (Image1)

Linscott to his wife, datelined "Camden, Oct 13th, 1862" with accounts of the Battle of Corinth…Capt. H.W. Purefoy, one of the Ft. Donelson prisoners, reached this place this evening. He left Vicksburg on Thrusday last. He tells me that Price and Van Dorn had a fight with Rosecrans on Friday, Saturday and Sunday inst. He says that the first two days our army was entirely successful, and that we captured a very large load of stores from the federals, but the enemy brought large reinforcements during Saturday night. The conflict renewed on Sunday morning when our forces were driven from the field with great slaughter, losing at the very lowest estimation 5,000 men killed and wounded, beside about 6,000 prisoners. We have further information that one regiment which went into the engagement 800 strong came out with only ten men., Very Fine, accompanied by transcript and historical background.
