1003 113 image1869, 2¢ brown, horizontal strip of five, tied by crossroads cancels on cover from Christiansted, Danish West Indies to Boston, Mass., stamps applied in St. Thomas with "Christiansted, 1871" origin cds underneath strip, part of red manuscript just showing out at right of strip likely denoting the U.S. postage of 10¢ was paid, "St. Thomas, 13/5 1871" transit cds and "N. York, Steamship, May 20" entry cds, Very Fine and choice, a Remarkable and Unique Franking of the 2¢ Pictorial Issue Paying the 10¢ West Indian Rate From Christiansted, illustrated in Engstrom Danish West Indies Mails, 1754-1917, Volume 1 (page 4-29). Scott No. 113  Estimate $15,000 - 20,000. About ninety percent of all covers recorded that were sent by U.S. packet from St. Thomas and entering in New York during the 1865-71 period were franked with a single U.S. 10¢ stamp prepaying the half ounce single rate. This cover was most likely franked as such due to a temporary shortage of 10¢ stamps at the St. Thomas post office. Sent from St. Thomas aboard the S.S. North America departing St. Thomas on May 13th and arriving in New York on May 20th, 1871. (Image1)
