Naval Foundry, Selma, Ala.", docketed on reverse "Major Mallet", Extremely Fine and rare. Scott No. 12  Estimate $500 - 750. Catesby ap Roger Jones was born in Fairfield, Virginia, on 15 April 1821. Appointed a Midshipman in the Navy in 1836, he served extensively at sea, receiving promotion to the rank of Lieutenant in 1849. During the 1850s, Jones was involved in development work on Navy weapons and served as ordnance officer on the new steam frigate "Merrimack" when she began active service in 1856.When Virginia left the Union in April 1861, Lieutenant Jones resigned his U.S. Navy commission, joining the Virginia Navy soon thereafter and becoming a Confederate Navy Lieutenant in June. In 1861-62, he was employed in converting the steam frigate "Merrimack" into an ironclad and was the ship's Executive Officer when she was commissioned as "CSS Virginia". When her Commanding Officer, Captain Franklin Buchanan, was wounded in the 8 March 1862 attack on "USS Cumberland" and "Congress", Jones temporarily took command, leading the ship during her historic engagement with "USS Monitor" on the following day. With the approach of the enemy troops, Norfolk was being evacuated. The "Virginia" could not be made light enough to go up the James River. To prevent its capture, the "Virginia" was run ashore in the bight of Carney Island and set afire. Later in 1862, he commanded a shore battery at Drewry's Bluff, on the James River, and the gunboat "Chattahoochee" while she was under construction at Columbus, Georgia.Promoted to the rank of Commander in April 1863, Jones was sent to Selma, Alabama, to take charge of the Ordnance Works there. For the rest of the Civil War, he supervised the manufacture of badly-needed heavy guns for the Confederate armed forces. With the end of the conflict in May 1865, Jones went into private business. After working in South America, he made his residence in Selma, where he was shot down on the streets of Selma, Alabama, June 29th, 1877, by a man whose child had had a fight with one of his children. On September 1, 1864, Confederate General John Bell Hood evacuated Atlanta, after a four-month siege mounted by Union General William Sherman and ordered all public buildings and possible Union assets destroyed.On September 2, the City was surrendered to Genl. Sherman, who sent a telegram to Washington reading, "Atlanta is ours, and fairly won". He established his headquarters there on September 7, where he stayed for two months. That same day, Sherman ordered the civilian population to evacuate. His forces occupied the city for several months, and he then ordered Atlanta burned to the ground on November 11 in preparation for his punitive march south. After a plea by Father Thomas O'Reilly of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Sherman did not burn the city's churches or hospitals. However, the remaining war resources were then destroyed in the aftermath and in Sherman's March to the Sea. General Sherman departed Atlanta at 7:00 a.m. on November 15.This use is probably after the Confederate re-occupation of Atlanta in 1865 as the Atlanta handstamps had been destroyed. . (Image1)

Scott No. 11  Estimate $7,500 - 10,000. The Mississippi River and inland waterway routes were essential lifelines within the Confederacy. Early in the war, Federal naval strategy focused on control of the Mississippi, and, by the spring of 1862, key port cities were captured by Federal forces, giving them control of the river. With the Southern states divided between East and West, the Confederate government was forced to devise special measures to maintain transportation and communication along the trans-Mississippi routes. Surreptitious traffic across the river was carried on by private and government couriers, and the post office was authorized to appoint agents to ensure that the mail lines remained open. In April 1863 the Confederate Congress authorized a "preferred mail" across the Mississippi River and established a 50¢ rate per half-ounce. The act was revised to create an "express mail" without a fixed rate of postage, but instead limited to no more than a dollar per half ounce. By October 1863, Postmaster General Reagan secured a contract to have mail carried across the Mississippi at the rate of 40¢ per half ounce. Meridian and Brandon, Mississippi, were chosen as the eastern terminal points. Shreveport and Alexandria, Louisiana, were chosen as the western terminal points.One of the most Important Trans-Mississippi covers in existence! This is one of only four recorded covers sent from the "Steamer Crescent City", prior to the transfer of Prisoners to Morris Island on September 7, 1864. This extraordinarily inhumane act was the Federal response to an equally repulsive act on the part of Confederates in Charleston, who exposed Union prisoners to bombardment from Federal forces within range of the city. This sorry chapter of the war ended in a stalemate in October 1864. Covers from Confederate prisoners en route to and from or imprisoned on Morris Island are very rare. . (Image1)

Morris, N.Y. in combination with United States 1861 3¢ rose tied by grid cancel with "Old Point Comfort, Va./Aug. 25" double circle postmark, the cover s shows the rare Censor marking "Exd H.W." of Capt. Henry Wirz, included is original enclosure datelined "Anderson Ville, May the 2nd, 1864, State of Georgia", written from James Yencer to his wife and reads in part, "Dear Wife, I am a prisoner of war now. Plymouth was captured the 20th of April, their was 200 or more taken Prisoner, I am well yet, but the climate being so hot here & not being used to the water, I will most likely be sick…", cover lightly folded (affecting couple perfs of 3¢) & open on three sides, Very Fine, ex-Solomon, Antrim and pictured in his book; signed MacBride. Estimate  $7,500 - 10,000. Earl Antrim, in handstamp book "Civil War Prisons and Their Covers", gives an excellent description of Andersonville and we quote it in its entirety, "The Official Records say that Andersonville had its first prisoners on March 1, 1864, but there is a record of prisoners there on February I, 1864. It was the site of Camp Sumter, the most dreaded prison in the South. Prisoners' diaries damned it bitterly, and on arriving and seeing the filth and sickness would ask "Is this hell?" It consisted of twenty-six acres, partly swampy, and its inadequate huts and semi-shelters held as many as thirty-three thousand one hundred and fourteen at one time, so crowded there was hardly room to lie down to sleep. Of the approximately forty-five thousand six hundred and thirteen who were sent there, twelve thousand six hundred and forty-four died. Post war agitation by ex-prisoners succeeded in having Capt. Wirz, the prison commander, hanged for his treatment of them. The camp was surrounded by a wall 20 feet high, near the top of which was a small platform for the guards. It was guarded by sixty-four guards, eight on each end and twenty-four on each side. There were fortifications on high ground surrounding the camp. 'Packages of letters came to the prison by flag of truce, but under the regulations of Capt. Wirz every prisoner was compelled to pay the Captain 10¢ in silver before receiving his letter. The Captain knew very well that the greater number of men had no money and those who were so fortunate as to possess greenbacks must buy their silver from his sutler paying an enormous premium. These letters had been prepaid, and the stamp bore a 'worthless' photograph of Jeff Davis, but the Captain must have hard cash or he would keep the letters. And he kept them. These letters were worthless to him, but when he knew that kind words from home and love ones had come so near and were withheld. Yet this man gloated over their misery and became profane in his delight at their tears.'" Due to long delays in the mails, which were normal from this prison, this did not reach its recipient until after the sender James Yencer, passed away on August 2nd.A Stunning & Historic Cover which is probably the Finest Known Cover from Andersonville Prison. .
