Wonderful strike of dateless handstamp (MH 759, 1RRRR) on 1884 5¢ entire to San Francisco additional franked with 1882 5¢ ultramarine tied by concentric circle cancel with Honolulu postmark & magenta San Francisco arrival, backstamp with the very rare forwarder's four line handstamp in violet "Forwarded By J. M. Oat, Jr. & Co./Stationers & News/Dealers/Honolulu, H. I." (Gregory AUXFWDR-JMOAT, Rarity 1RRRR), adhesive with trivial corner crease & perf tip toning, Very Fine, a wonderful rarity. Estimate  $750 - 1,000. This cover was left in the Stationers store of J.M. Oat & Co. after the Post Office was closed, who carried it to the Post Office or directly boat side where the rare "Late Letter Mail" marking was applied. This mark reflect payment of an extra fee for processing a late letter. Starting in mid-1882, letters brought to the Honolulu Post Office after the posted closing time for a mail shipment were charged an additional 5¢ fee to have their letters included in the mail. The fee was charged more to discourage the practice of bringing in late letters than for revenue. (Image1)
