Scott No. 295a; $50,000.

STILL AN ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 1901 2¢ PAN-AMERICAN WITH INVERTED CENTER.

The 2¢ is the rarest of the regularly issued Pan-American Inverts with probably no more than 200 being issued based upon the fact that two distinct shades exist of the error, and therefore two panes of 100 were released. Current estimates show that less than 100 examples have survived, including about a half dozen used singles and two mint blocks (one rejoined).

2443     296a image1901, 4¢ Pan-American, center inverted. Disturbed part o.g., rich bold colors; some gum redistributed covering a few tiny thins, Fine appearance, with 2014 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 296a; $80,000.

A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 4¢ PAN-AMERICAN WITH CENTER INVERTED.

The 4¢ invert was printed deliberately as the result of a misunderstanding. After the discovery of the 1¢ and 2¢ inverts in mid-1901, the Third Assistant Postmaster, Edwin C. Madden, decided to track down any additional errors. He had his assistant instruct the Bureau of Engraving and Printing to send any inverted Pan-American stamps to Madden's office. No inverted stamps in fact remained on hand, and interpreting Madden's communique as an unconditional demand for inverts, the Bureau produced four sheets of them from the 4 cent plates and sent 400 copies on to Madden. About about half were marked "Specimen" and between 1901 and 1904 Madden distributed 172 examples.

2444 ()    296a image1901, 4¢ Pan-American, center inverted. Regummed, rich colors (slightly oxidized); faulty, Fine appearance, with 1976 & 2025 P.F. certificates.
Scott No. 296a; $80,000.

AN AFFORDABLE EXAMPLE OF THE 4¢ PAN-AMERICAN INVERT.

The 4¢ Pan-American Invert was a special printing and not regularly issued. Examples were distributed through two official channels, and the gum on the majority of stamps without "Specimen" overprint was disturbed. In fact, because 97 of the stamps were removed from an album page, they are generally thinned or have seriously disturbed gum.

Scott No. 360; $27,500.

AN HANDSOME EXAMPLE OF THE OF THE 1909 4¢ BLUISH PAPER RARITY.

According to Johl (Vol. 1, page 175), the only source of the 4¢ and 8¢ Bluish stamps was the archives of the Post Office Department. Approximately 80 of each were traded for rare stamps missing from the archives. Given the failed experimental nature of the paper mixture, it is no surprise that virtually all copies are off-center to some extent.

2456     389 image1911, 3¢ deep violet, type I, S.L. watermark, the "Orangeburg" coil, perf. 12 vertically. Great color, tied to light buff Bell & Company imprint "Columbian Clasp" envelope (most uses are on bluish envelopes) addressed to a "John Bauer," Columbus, Ohio, Very Fine, ex-Boker, with 1970 P.F. cert. submitted by "Paul Bauer" and signed by John Boker as well as 2001 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 389; $25,000.

CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF THE VERY FINEST ORANGEBURG COIL COVERS EXTANT.

The Orangeburg coil was produced by the Post Office Department in 1911 for the exclusive use of the Bell Pharmaceutical Company. These 3¢ coil stamps were employed to mail product samples to physicians. Owing to the large volume of correspondence, the covers were processed through the first-class cancelling machine at Orangeburg, New York. Their intended use on third-class mail, combined with the general lack of awareness among contemporary philatelists regarding their production, accounts for the great rarity of genuine examples today.
