Wagshal in Chronicle 130 (May 1986), where he explained that the perforating machine responsible for the Chicago Perf stamps was invented by Dr. Elijah W. Hadley, a Chicago dentist who likely built it in 1854. The distinctive 12½-gauge perforation was applied to sheets of the 1¢ (Plates 1 Late and 2) and the 3¢ 1851 Issue, with the 1¢ being considerably rarer; according to a census compiled by W. Wilson Hulme II and published in Chronicle 175 (August 1997).
