A SCARCE 5¢ NUMERAL MIXED FRANKING COVER DIRECTED VIA PANAMA RATHER THAN THE DEFAULT OVERLAND ROUTE.
In 1865 the default
route to the East was the daily overland coach via Salt Lake; however, the sender could always inscribe a letter "per steamer via Panama", especially if it was thought that winter snows might delay transport across the mountains.
