41       imageHawaii, 1867 Nicolaefsky, Siberia to Tenants' Harbor, Me. via Honolulu. Cover with blue "Steamer Idaho., Nov 2, 1867" oval purser's handstamp, addressed to Capt. John Bickmore, sharp strike of red "Hawaiian Steam Service" oval handstamp, endorsed "Via Panama", entered mails with "San Francisco, Cal., Nov 18" cds & quartered cork duplex, matching "10" cent due rating handstamp, docketed "July 7' 1867" at left; partial backflap, Very Fine, Gregory HSS oval census no. 3, ex-Peters.
Estimate; $5,000 - 7,500.

ONLY RECORDED COVER FROM SIBERIA TRANSITING HAWAII---ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED COVERS BEARING THE IDAHO OVAL DATESTAMP - A REMARKABLE LETTER FROM SIBERIA VIA HONOLULU CARRIED ON THE FIRST CONTRACT TRIP OF THE STEAMSHIP IDAHO TO THE UNITED STATES.

This letter was carried by American Bark "Behring" from Nicolaefsky sailing Sep. 22nd (1867) to Honolulu, arriving Sep. 30th. It was transshipped to the "Idaho", apparently posted at the wharf, as there is no Honolulu postmark, and bears the "Idaho" Nov. 2nd 1867 purser's oval. Carried by the steamship "Idaho" on her maiden contract voyage (second trip) from Honolulu Nov. 2nd to San Francisco arriving Nov. 15th. Postmarked at San Francisco Nov. 18th and carried by the steamer "Montana" departing San Francisco the following day, Nov. 19th to Panama.

The sender, Albert Smith Bickmore (1839-1914), was an American naturalist and one of the founders of the American Museum of Natural History. He traveled extensively in the Malay archipelago and eastern Asia during 1865-69, collecting objects in natural history, principally shells. This letter was written home to his father during his Far East travels, reading "I have come as I had planned up the Gulf of Tartary in a Russian Man-of-war…From Hakodate we crossed the Japan Victoria or Peter the Great Bay on the Coast of Manchuria, …and finally to this city. Since I arrived here I have been studying the different peoples in this part of Asia and shall soon send a second paper on that subject to the Boston Soc. of Nat. Hist. The Governor here received me into the greatest kind and offered me a "Carte blanche", over his territory that is to go where I pleased free of any cost… He gave me a small steamer and I have been up the river…to see the natives and examine old monuments."

Foreign Mails Via Mexico
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
42       imageHawaii, (Via Mexico) 1838 Oahu to Boston via Mexico. "Franco En, Guaimas" black two-line handstamp on folded letter datelined "Oahu, April 24, 1838", entered the U.S. mails at New York with red "New York, Nov 7" cds and matching "Ship" straightline handstamp, manuscript "39½" rate mark for 37½¢ distance rate New York to Boston plus 2¢ ship captain's fee, additional manuscript at top right ".25 paid L & Co." referring to the Mexican rate of postage (2 reales, or 25¢) for transit from the western port of Guaimas (Guaymas) to the eastern port of Vera Cruz, paid to Ladd & Co. who facilitated the connection with the various mail forwarders at both ports, Very Fine, Gregory Via Mexico - Eastward census no. 9, ex-Rust & Pietsch.
Estimate; $3,000 - 4,000.

ONE OF TWO RECORDED VIA GUAIMAS COVERS FROM THE HAWAIIAN ISLAND.

Carried on the Mexican schooner "Swallow" (dep. Honolulu Apr. 27, 1838). As surmised by Gregory in his discussion of this letter's nearly identical twin (carried in the same mail bag), it was likely given to the American vice-consul in Guaymas, Juan Robinson, who would have paid the Mexican postage and deposited the letter with the Guaymas post office where it was marked with their two-line handstamp. Civil conflict in the western Mexican states at the time, and the French blockade of the Vera Cruz port, resulted in one of the longest recorded via Mexico transit times (195 days). Upon reaching Vera Cruz, this letter (and its twin) were carried to Havana, and then transhipped to the William and Mary (dep. Havana Oct. 20; arr. NY Nov. 7).

43       imageHawaii, (Via Mexico) Honolulu, Oahu, Sandwich Islands, Augt. 5, '43. Dateline on folded cover addressed to Thomas Clymer in Morrisville, Pa., blue "New Orleans, La., Oct 24" cds with matching "Ship" straight line and manuscript "52" double rate, interesting letter discussing "different ships, Constellation via Mazatlan, Pacific Squadron, 32 gun frigate", etc.; stain at center, Very Fine.
Estimate; $750 - 1,000.

A most unusual origin for New Orleans ship mail, carried to Mazatlan on Her British Majesty's Corvette "Hazard", sailing August 7th; the schooner "Amazon" arrived at New Orleans Oct. 24, 1843 in 15 days from Veracruz, written by George Clymer (1804-1881) who, at this time, was a surgeon assigned to the Pacific Squadron serving on the sloop USS "Cyane".

Scarborough, Mazatlan", and final directive at bottom "Via New York & Vera Cruz", carried on the USS Cyane from Mazatlan (dep. Feb. 22; arr. Honolulu Mar.13), then by interisland schooner to Lahaina with receipt docketing "Charles M. Fowler…Rcd at Lahaina, March 20th, 1846", F.-V.F., ex-Van Dyke & Golden.

The sender, S.H. Williams & Co, was headed by Stephen H. Williams and was the successor to the original C. Brewer & Co. business. The name would revert back to C. Brewer & Co. in 1859. The addressee, James Hunnewell, was the original founder, in 1817, of the mercantile business that would eventually become C. Brewer & Co. Interestingly, Hunnewell's second visit to the Islands was as First Officer on the Thaddeus, charged with bringing the First Company of American missionaries that landed at Kailua-Kona in 1820.nn

ONE OF ONLY A FEW RECORDED COVERS VIA PANAMA BETWEEN CLOSURE OF THE BUTTERFIELD SOUTHERN OVERLAND ROUTE AND THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE CENTRAL ROUTE.

As the Central overland route wasn't yet the default route for East coast mail, and with the southern route closed, this letter was sent via Panama for a relatively quick 3 week transit time from San Francisco to Boston.---The 'care/of' designee, G.W. Bond Co., was a wool business in Boston founded by George William Bond in 1848. He used the outside of the envelope to write a message to both Annie and H.F. Bond (his younger brother Henry Frederick Bond) in Waltham, about the recent passing of "Grandmother May", referring to the mother of his first wife, Sophia Augusta May. He signed the message simply "G.B."

Carried on the American bark "Yankee" (dep. Honolulu May 20; arr. S.F. June 4) for the Panama route.

Pkt., Paid, May 23" datestamp, with red "12" handstamp for the 12¢ credit to Prussia for its portion of the international rate, blue boxed "Aachen 6 6, Franco" handstamp showing date of Prussian entry (June 6), blue ink manuscript "wfr 2" for charge (in silbergroschen, about 5¢ total) to carry the letter across the German-Austrian Postal Union to the Swiss border, a large red crayon "6" just to the right indicating the Swiss charge (in kreuzers, about 3¢ total) for its inland rate, multiple (5 different) Swiss backstamps, ultimately forwarded to the village of Wavre located at the northeast end of Lake Neuchatel; couple small stamp flaws, Very Fine, ex-Christian, with 2000 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. U.S. 68; Estimate $7,500 - 10,000.

ONLY RECORDED HAWAII COVER TO SWITZERLAND VIA PRUSSIAN CLOSED MAIL---A SPECTACULAR 3-COLOR US FRANKING FROM HAWAII TO SWITZERLAND.

The 38¢ total franking overpaid, by 3¢, the 33¢ Prussian closed mail rate to Switzerland plus 2¢ ship fee. The Hawaii 5¢ foreign rate was paid in cash or charged to the account of the sender. The 3¢ overpayment suggests that the sender was unaware that the 3¢ US transcontinental postage was included in the 33¢ international rate.

VERY RARE EARLY USAGE OF A CONSULATE IMPRINT COVER FROM HAWAII - ONE OF EIGHT RECORDED COVERS SENT TO BRITAIN DURING THE 24¢ TRANSATLANTIC RATE PERIOD.

From July 1, 1863 to Dec. 31, 1867, a single letter to Great Britain posted anywhere in the United States cost 24¢ per 1/2 ounce. From Hawaii a single letter cost 24¢ plus 5¢ for the Hawaii foreign rate, plus 2¢ ship fee, for a total of 31¢. The ship fee would be eliminated on Hawaii mail sent beyond the United States, so-called "through letters", in August 1866, with the exception of mail sent to Canada.

Carried on the American bark "Onward" (dep. Honolulu June 28, 1865; arr. S.F. July 17) for the overland route, then from New York on the Inman Line steamship "Etna" (dep. N.Y. Aug. 26; arr. Queenstown Sept. 6, Liverpool Sept. 7).

Scott No. U.S. 69; Estimate $7,500 - 10,000.

A STUNNING CIVIL WAR PATRIOTIC USED FROM HAWAII - ONE OF FIVE RECORDED PATRIOTIC COVERS FROM HAWAII.

The 12¢ US stamp paid the 10¢ intercontinental rate plus the 2¢ ship fee. The Hawaiian foreign rate (5¢) was paid in cash by the sender, or charged to their account. Most of the American missionaries in Hawaii were from New England, abhorred slavery and were supportive of the Union cause.---The addressee, Julia Gulick, was the youngest of 8 children, and the only daughter, of Rev. Peter and Fanny Gulick, missionaries with the 3rd Company that arrived in Honolulu from Boston on March 30, 1828. Julia, born on Kauai in 1845, would have been 17 years old at the time of this letter, with some evidence suggesting she was attending the Union Theological Seminary in the Chelsea area of Manhattan. Thirteen years later, after having returned to Hawaii, she would move to Japan with her ailing parents in 1874 and become an ABCFM missionary there, with her brother Orramel, while living in central and southern Japan. She returned to Hawaii in 1907.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED USAGES OF THE 1861 30¢ ORANGE FROM HAWAII, AND THE UNIQUE PRUSSIAN CLOSED MAIL USAGE TO DENMARK.

Carried on the American bark "Comet" (dep. Honolulu Dec. 15, 1866; arr. S.F. Jan. 3, 1867) for the overland mail to New York, then by American packet ship "Germania" (Inman Line, dep. N.Y. RARE USE OF THE 2¢ BLACKJACK TO PAY THE CAPTAIN'S SHIP FEE.

An interesting cover with a missing stamp and no postage due marking. The three stamps appear to have all been present and canceled upon arrival at San Francisco, with traces of the missing stamp's cancel seen along the left edge of the perfs where the stamp was originally placed. The San Francisco postmark was then applied sometime later, between the Nov. 9 arrival and Nov. 11 departure, during which time the 1¢ stamp went missing. The address panel is written in the hand of Mary Allen, the wife of Hawaii Chief Justice and Minister to the US Elisha Hunt Allen. The addressee, Mrs. Hobbs, was Mary Jane's adoptive mother.

Carried on the American bark "Comet" (dep. Honolulu Oct. 22, 1867; arr. S.F. Nov. 9).
