Matching pair of embossed cameo ad covers from the Palmetto Iron Works, Columbia, S.C., both franked with 3¢ 1857 issues (one is #25), both tied by different type Columbia, S.C. cds's and addressed to Maybington, S.C., Very Fine and attractive.

Palmetto Iron Works was a large industrial complex founded in the 1850s that made firearms and edged weapons for the South Carolina militia, and later became a key supplier of weapons to the Confederacy. It was largely destroyed in Feb., 1865 by Union troops under Gen. William Sherman during his march to the sea through the South.
