Group of six comprising two 1860-61 covers from USS Sumter off the Coast of Africa on anti-slavery patrol, 1860-61 cover from New Sharon Me. to USS Mohican, African Squadron, 1845-51 c. from USS Marion that was on the West Coast of Africa or the Mediterranean; 1850 letter from USS John Adams off the coast of Africa near St. Paul de Loando to Boston Mass. via Salem, and 1848 letter from USS Brig Perry off the coast of Natal, Brazil which was on anti-slavery patrol between Africa and Brazil, F.-V.F., interesting group.

The U.S.S. "Caledonia" was chartered by the Navy in September of 1858 and entered service soon after sailing for South America to take part in the 18 ship Paraguay Expedition, attempting to gain apology for the 1855 firing upon the survey steamer "Water Witch". In January 1859, the Caledonia took up position above Rosario in Rio de la Plata. Paraguay agreed to apologize for incident and pay indemnity. (Image1)

Duplex postmark tying Airmail 6¢ Wright Bros. issue on cover to New Jersey, with "Flown: McMurdo Sound-South Pole., First Landing Deepfreeze 111." unsigned endorsement, reverse signed by legendary explorer Sir Edmund Hillary, Very Fine.

Sir Edmund Hillary reached the South Pole as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition, for which he led the New Zealand section, on 4 January 1958.
