3242   Mexico, Maximilian Ephemera - Autograph on a Government Document and Token. Unusual ephemera of Maximilian autograph is on a 8 inches by 11 inch watermarked, laid paper official document for payment of services to a government contractor, dated October 29, 1866. The Maximilian signature here shows the characteristic triple line below the signature. The approximate translation is : "We designate to the…Imperial of the department of … Mr. Juan Francisco Gomez…for remuneration of services of his commission, three thousand pesos…and fifteen hundred for being Secretary of Travels. Given in Orizava 29 of October 1866. (signed) by Maximilian. As Minister of Government." Similar documents for sale were at much higher prices, see enclosed information. A small gold "token", dated 1865, that was never officially issued, has the bust of Maximilian, for added interest.

With 800+ stamps from 36 districts from ½r to 8r, stamps were selected for quality so many have large margins and great cancels, districts include Acapulco, Apam, Campeche, Chalco, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Colima, Cordova, Cuernavaca, Durango, Guadalajara, Guanajuato, Hermosillo, Huejutla, Jalapa, Lagos, Maravatio, Mazatlan, Merida, Mexico (with two #12 used and unused with MEPSI certs), Gothics (including nine 4r rose on RPS paper), Monterrey. Included are lithograph and engraved Maximilians, with a total of 332 stamps, and 9 Mepsi certificates. This is one of the largest Maximilian collections seen, on any recent market. The Follansbee value not counting subs, plate varieties or cancels is approximately $17,795. A page of Maximilian "remainders" is included for completion.
