Straightline postmark (SAC-2470) with integral rate marking (without the usual "PAID" in the cliche) on folded letter to New Brunswick, New Jersey; great letter datelined "Calafornia Gold Diggins Oct 21st 1849", in part, "we are on the American Fork about 230 miles above San Francisco at a place called the Salmon Falls…[first week] dug out of the bed of the river $240.00" with much more detail on the mining life of a true 49er, Extremely Fine, truly an exhibition piece, ex-Jarrett.

Black oval datestamp (Williams SAC-2480) with magenta manuscript "40" rate marking on folded letter to Cincinnati, Ohio, reverse with rare red circular handstamp "San Francisco Recd 6 Mar" (similar to Williams SAF-310 reported used Sep 30, 1850 to Nov 5, 1851, but with the "Recd" at the bottom of the dial; thus, unlisted in Williams and apparently the precursor to SAF-310); letter datelined "Plumas Sunday March 17, 1850" (erroneously dated by the writer), with contents, in part, "…I have been in the New Town one week at 10$ per day and board Mr. Nathan Scotfield the surveyor engaged me to come up from Sacramento City on Saturday 9 Feby. We arrived at this Beautiful Location at dusk and slept in a cabin without a roof…I am within 20 miles or less from the region of gold diggers and hundreds if not thousands pass along daily on land or water thro this place…Steam Boats can run within 100 feet of our cabin during the whole year, 55 miles above Sacramento City or about 200 miles from San Francisco…Plumas is on the Feather River some 20 miles above its mouth and about the same below the mouth of Yuba River where it empties into Feather River…W.C. Laurence" with much additional writing on mining, immigration, etc.; some internal staining of lettersheets, toning along folds, Very Fine, This cover is the subject of an article written by Dr. Milgram in Western Express (Sept. 2010).
