Small red cds with black "40" in circle rate handstamp on cover to San Jose, California; forwarded to Sacramento with light red somewhat oily and indistinct cds of San Jose, Cal, and manuscript "Forwd 12½" and "52½" manuscript beneath that indicating the total due by the recipient; docketing on verso "June the 13/51"; minor backflap damage, Very Fine, a scarce item with the 40¢ Trans-Continental rate and the 12½¢ internal California rate.

Four covers with each original enclosures all datelined "Lancha Plana" and discussing various aspects of mining and the trials and tribulations thereof, each cover franked with 1857 3¢ dull red, three with manuscript postmark and matching cancellation and on with Lancha Plana cds tying adhesive, letter datelined May 5 reads, in part "…Our paper man always beings our letters & papers up to us without any trouble on our part, but the old hand has left the office and they have got a muckle headed lager-beer Dutchman in his place and sour-crout han't quite got the run of the business…Life here at best is a kind of see-saw affair, at one moment we are kicking the bearer of comfort and prosperity, and anon up to our A---s, in the mire of despondency"; some minor cover wear, but overall, Very Fine, a very interesting and pretty group.

As I am going to Volcano tomorrow I thought I would write a few lines to let you know how we get along and take it along with me and mail in Volcano…Ned says two squaws kissed him for you as a token of friendship towards them for the pot of beans and loaf of bread…, some cover wear, missing backflap, Fine.

Large blue cds (CAL-430) with target killer tying 3¢ 1861 issue adhesive on cover to Stockton, with enclosed letter datelined "Centerville February the 12, 1862", in part in speeking of the war you thought you wood soon put the Rebells down as for my part I wood be glad to heer of it soon and as for California it is as mutch in faviour of the union as one part of the Eastern steates…was no male [mail] carred but express for sum time and was carred in a skiff for sum time; reduced at right up to stamp, Very Fine and attractive, an excellent letter with Civil War content and historic news of the Great Flood of 1862.
