A GREAT WESTERN COVER SHOWING THE "CALIFORNIA" DESIGNATION FOR SALT LAKE CITY.

When the Salt Lake City post office was established by the U.S. Government on January 18, 1849, no expense provision or contract was made to transport the mails. It was left to the Mormons to carry the U.S. mails at their own expense. This letter was carried east by a special express headed by A. W. Babbitt, which left Salt Lake City on Oct 19, 1849 for Kanesville, Iowa on the Missouri River. Although the postmaster at Salt Lake City for a while in 1849 used the term "Cal." in his manuscript postmark, the town was not attached to California for Post Office Department administrative purposes (as Fort Leavenworth and Scott were attached to Missouri).

Leavenworth. We started from Ft. Leavenworth on the 8th day of July and arrived at this Post on the first day of Nov. making a stop of two months at Fort Halleck two hundred and eighty miles east of here. We were sent on the plains I suppose for the purpose of suppressing the indians which were very troublesome at that time the 7th was ahead of us about three weeks they were foolish enough to start out with Sabres and revolvers alone this the red devils soon found out and were no more afraid of them than they were of the rain. Colorado troops who were on the line at that time for the indians can shoot very accurately from two to three hundred yards with their bows and arrows and this our boys could not always do with their pistols…;" second is cover postmarked with partial small cds "Fort Bridger, Utah Apr [5] 1866" franked with 1861 3¢ rose with original enclosure which reads, in part, "…Another great reason is if my father is alive he must be found and I have great reason to believe he is as I have seen a young man that was in the same regiment (4th Wis) at the time of the storm in which he was reported killed…", last is a cover postmarked "Big Thompson, Col." two incomplete strikes of double-circle cds with smudge of cork killer on 3¢ 1861 issue (defective) to Michigan; original enclosure datelined "Big Thompson, Col. Scott No. U10; Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

ONE OF ONLY FOUR EXAMPLES RECORDED FROM THIS RARE AND SHORT-LIVED WASHINGTON TERRITORIAL POST OFFICE (1858-1860).

Camp Semiahmoo was founded by the Boundary Commission in 1858 as a base of operation for the northwest boundary commission survey on Canadian soil, among the remnants of the earlier British camp, on a little strip of open land near the mouth of the little Campbell River close to one of the Semiahmoo winter camps. The site was just north of the forty-ninth parallel; contained a fresh water supply, and the Campbell River channel provided water access over the tidal flats. While at this site the troops constructed about a mile and three-quarters of good road along the shore of Semiahmoo Bay between the boundary and Camp Semiahmoo. This base was later used while the boundary was slashed and marked from Semiahmoo Bay to the Sumas Flats.
