James C. Truman began his J. C. Truman Express in January 1864 soon after arriving in San Francisco. He took Chapman as a partner on February 16, 1864 and after Chapman withdrew in 1865, he formed Truman & Co's Express. It operated until 1868 from San Francisco to San Jose by rail and to Watsonville and Santa Cruz.

Sharp blue double-line company oval handstamp (SIN-101) on folded four-page circular to Hamilton, Butte Co., Cala; black "PAID" handstamp; circular has great detail for "Claims Against the United States, Clement W. Bennett, Attorney at Law and Agent for Claims, Corner of H and 11th Streets, Washington, D.C.", Extremely Fine.

ONE OF ONLY ABOUT HALF A DOZEN EXAMPLES OF THIS TYPE SINGER'S HANDSTAMP AND UNDOUBTEDLY A UNIQUE USAGE ON A PRINTED CIRCULAR.

William E. Singer and Anan Fargo were the partners in W. E. Singer & Co.'s Express, for which the first ad appeared in the Jan 14, 1854 Bidwell Butte Register. The express served several dozen mining camps, primarily along the North and South Forks of the Feather River, as well as a couple on the Middle Fork. The Singer/Fargo partnership dissolved Oct 17, 1855, being succeeded by Singer & Co's Feather River Express Henry Keefer and Thomas Morrow, proprietors.
