741     35 image1859, 10¢ green, type V. illustrated Four-Horse Stagecoach design on circa 1860 yellow cover to Hanover, N.H., indistinct balloon-style cds ties 1857 10¢ green (35), minor toned spots in address area, Very Fine and attractive, David D'Alessandris' article in a recent issue of Western Express notes that there are only four examples of this Type F1 propaganda cover.

The first U.S. overland mail contract connecting San Francisco to the Mississippi River cities was made with the Overland Mail Company as contractor. The "Southern" route name quickly became synonymous with the Company president, John Butterfield. This was a biweekly service (later more frequently between Los Angeles and San Francisco) in operation from September 16, 1858 through March 1861, when because of the impending Civil War, Congress determined to move the overland mail route north to the Central Overland Route.

White, Virgen Bay, To Nicaragua, Central America", about half of backflap missing, minor wear, Extremely Fine and an outstanding strike of this rare marking, with 1967 P.F. Certificate, which notes "that the Nicaragua Line marking is genuine, but decline to express an opinion as to the use of the cover"; likely simply carried from the west coast to Nicaragua.

744       imageNicaragua Line In Advance Of The Mail. Bold strike of oval handstamp on small ladies cover to Stockton carried entirely outside the mails, handed over to Adams Express company for transmission to Stockton with their blue rope oval handstamp of San Francisco next to the Nicaragua marking, Extremely Fine, ex-Lichtenstien.
Estimate; $2,000 - 3,000.

A GREAT RARITY. A SIMILAR EXAMPLE SOLD IN OUR SALE #26, LOT #174 (APRIL, 2007) WHERE IT REALIZED $3500.

This cover is one of only a very few incoming covers from the East, which was handed directly to Adams & Co's Express and was never handled by the Post Office; Ashbrook Vol. II, states, "Covers showing via Nicaragua marking that traveled from east to west are extremely rare.", he goes to state that he has seen only four covers with this Via Nicaragua marking going in either direction.

Wonderful four-page illustrated lettersheet with three pages of printed advertising, and one for message; first page illustrates steamship and lists the names of the ships in the Nicaragua (Vanderbilt) line: Northern Light, Star of the West, Prometheus, Daniel Webster, Sierra, Nevada, Cortes, Uncle Sam, Pacific, and Brother Jonathan; second page contains more details on rates of passage, etc. with printed Cha's Morgan, Agent, No 2 Bowling Green, New York; third page has the letter datelined New York Dec 1, 1855 signed by Chas Morgan which reads in part "Grenada is not on our line, but if you will enclose a letter or letters to me for Col Walker, I have no doubt they will reach him." Colonel Walker being the filibusterer in Nicaragua; fourth page shows large illustration of the steamship line's office in New York with G. H. Wines & Co.'s California Express in lower level, along with map showing location in NY., no envelope accompanying, Very Fine and rare.

A WONDERFUL COLLATERAL ITEM FOR THE NICARAGUA LINE COLLECTOR. EXHIBIT WORTHY.

Cornelius Vanderbilt opened a route across Nicaragua in 1851 to compete with the U.S. Mail Steamship Company and Pacific Mail Steamship Company which held the U.S. Mail Contract via Panama. His handstamps typically boasted "Ahead of the Mails." He subsequently became a competitor to the PMSS on the Panama route.

This was carried from San Francisco on the Feb. 1, 1850 trip of the PMSS Steamer "Panama". It is believed the manuscript notation on this cover is a route agent postmark applied by the Post Office agent.

758       imageThe Star of the Union - California. blue four-horse overland stage illustrated cover (D'Alessandris Type E-2) to New York, franked with 1857 10¢ green (35) cover tied by "Santa Cruz Cal. Feb 4" cds with additional strike alongside, addressed to NY; includes is original enclosure datelined "Santa Cruz, Feb 9th, 1861" with wonderful contents regarding the onset of the Civil War reads, in part, "…South Carolina is a living demonstration of the old adage in Heathen mithology whome the Gods would destroy they first make mad. I suppose you ar all in a hubbub over their, in perfect consternation, for fear South Carolina will conquer our government…The Palmeto State rebuked and reap the bitter fruits of her own folly. Mr. Pardee says Brother Benj. is full of fight that he was so far strayed from his Quaker education, and so nearly conquered His peace proclivity as to be ready sword in hand to go down south and give them a drubbing…There may be some sesesionist(s) among us but they are the exception not the rule. As a state we are on the side of government and should a final seperation take place making a free & slave confederacy we shall be numbered among the Free states…", paper restoration along left edge with a tiny portion of the original illustration missing at left, F.-V.F. and an outstanding letter.
