702       image(Sierra) Downieville, Cal. Feb. 15, 1859. Cds's on buff cover to Boston franked with 1857 10¢ green, type III (33) tied by fancy star in circle with hollow center, Very Fine, this is featured in an article written by Dr. Milgram in Western Express (Dec. 2000).

A LOVELY CALIFORNIA FANCY CANCEL WITH ONLY TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE HOLLOW STAR.

The are six different type Star cancels used from Downieville. This is the first type and the rarest of all, thought to be only two known examples.

Cds (SIE-290) on cover to Kenosha, Wis.; double the 10¢ rate cover franked with six examples of 1861 3¢ rose adhesive and two 1861 1¢ adhesives, all socked-on-the-nose with fancy Star handstamp; two 3¢ adhesives with small defect, cover with minor corner wear at left, Very Fine and attractive, A striking combination of stamps and star killers on a double-rate cover.

Light partial cds (SIE-560) on cover to Michigan with Red and Blue Patriotic Flag design, franked with three 3¢ rose 1861 issue and one 1¢ blue 1861 issue (natural straight edge left) stamps making up the 10¢ rate, each neatly pen canceled on the nose; Williams notes that this type postmark was used from Jan 2, 1858 to Apr 16, 1862, possibly dating this cover to 1861; light edge wear and couple perf flaws, F.-V.F., A very scarce example of a patriotic cover used from California.

705       image(Sierra) Goodyears Bar, Cal. Feb 6. Red cds with embossed red cameo design "The Grizley" on cover franked with 1851 3¢ dull red with pen cancel, addressed to Sacramento; minor deterioration at upper left & slightly reduced at right, also included is blue embossed cameo corner card (cut only) of "Miners", Fine, cover thought to be the only known example., the cover is ex-Salzer & Vogel.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

Cover illustrated in color in Coburn's "Letters of Gold" (page 232). The grizzly bear is the official California state animal and is featured on the California State Flag, which was adopted in 1911. The grizzly bear first appeared on the banner raised over Sonoma during the Bear Flag Revolt against Mexican rule in June of 1846. The original Bear Flag was lost in the fire that followed the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. These two items were in an article written by Dr. Milgram in the Western Express (March 2013).

706       image(Siskiyou) Callahans Ranch Cal May 28. Manuscript postmark (SIS-580) with manuscript "Paid 10¢" at right on buff cover to East Chester, N.Y., this cover likely ca. 1859, Very Fine, a rare manuscript Ranch postmark.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

The town was named for M. B. Callahan who built a store at the location in 1851 as a supply point for the mines. On Feb 15, 1858 a post office was established as Callahan's Ranch.

707       image(Solano) Benicia, Cal. Dec 29. Bold strike of black two-line handstamp with manuscript "40" rate with "Charges PMC" on blue folded letter to Connecticut with dateline "Nappa City Dec 18th 1849" reads, in part, "…I am now in California and god help the man that ever started for this place…All I have to say about it is that if I was in the states and was making twenty five cents A day I would stay their…the gold is here but nine men out of ten get sick when they go in to mines, if I could keep my health in the mines I could make a fortune…T.G. Hammond,"; minor discoloration, Very Fine.

THIS PROVISIONAL HANDSTAMP WAS USED FOR 6 MONTHS UNTIL THE FIRST CDS ARRIVED BY MAY 1850. ONE OF THE FINEST KNOWN AND THE EARLIEST DATE RECORDED IN WILLIAM'S BOOK.

It is interesting to note that this early strike shows the outer portion of the device handstamp. We are aware of two others examples of this rare California straight line postmark, one of which is in red.
