29       imageEcuador, Quito. Bold straight line first type postmark on October 6th, 1769 folded letter from the President of the Audience of Quito addressed to the Royal Treasury in Popayan (Colombia); cover with some light cleaning, Very Fine, with 2001 Moorhouse certificate.

THE EARLIEST DATED PRESTAMP MARK OF THIS FIRST QUITO POSTMARK - ONE OF ONLY THREE KNOWN EXAMPLES IN BLACK.

This letter from the President of the Audience of Quito, directed to an official of the Royal Treasury in Popayan, may have gone on the second northbound dispatch to Quito to Cartagena under the Spanish Crown's newly established mail service, the "Royal Renta de Correos". The manuscript cross at the top of the letter was placed there to indicate "safe carriage in the sight of God".

32   imageEcuador, Quito. Red second type postmark on official document, with matching "Franca" handstamp, pencil "1785" archival date, Very Fine, one of the most elusive origin marks from Quito.
Estimate; $400 - 600.

It has been stated that no more than five examples of this origin mark are known. It differs from the first type Quito postmark in that it lacks the period after "Quito" and the letters are taller.

First type straight line postmark on 1779 folded letter to Lambayque in Peru, with matching boxed "Franca." handstamp above; some light cover edge wear, F.-V.F., this being the earliest "Franca" mark from Riobamba, it is among the few known letter from the Audience of Quito from the 1770's.

THE FINEST OF ONLY THREE KNOWN EXAMPLES OF THE RIOBAMBA "VIVA FERNANDO VII" BOXED HANDSTAMP - ONE OF THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER COLONIAL MARKS OF ECUADOR.

These so called "Patriotic Marks" were intended to demonstrate allegiance to the Spanish Crown in the period just prior to the achievement of Independence.

40       imageEcuador, Santiago de las Montanas. Dateline with a "Fines de Nobre al 1815" dating on small folded letter to Macas, endorsed "Francas", Very Fine, perhaps the only surviving Colonial letter sent within the Amazon Region.

Datelined Santiago de las Montanas, a small town on the eastern side of the Andes near Loja, and sent to Macas, another small in the Upper Amazon region.
