This device is said to have been a survivor from the Colonial Era and is believed to be the origin of the large district overprint (with oval remoxed) used on the 1861 issue. Perhaps as few as five examples are known.

1294     2 imageMexico, San Luis Potosi, 1856, 1r yellow, horizontal pair. Tied by circular San Luis Potosi date stamps (Schatzkes 1443) on July 21, 1861 datelined folded letter to Hacienda del Carro, used over three months after the release of the new 1861 issues to San Luis Potosi, Very Fine.

San Luis Potosi received only the initial delivery, Invoice 130 on April 19, 1861, thereforeb the use of the previous issue is considered provisional. The lack of stamps is attributed to the blocking of deliveries by the Conservatives/Reactionaries (War of Reform).
