Blue provisional handmade circular date stamp tying 1852, 1¢ blue, type IV, horizontal strip of three on cover to Drennon Springs, Ky., additional strike at right with manuscript date, with townmark made after fire destroyed the Little Rock post office on February 4th 1853, accompanied by second cover from correspondence franked with manuscript canceled 1851, 3¢ dull red (11) with manuscript "Little Rock, Ark, Feb 8" postmark four days after the fire and with enclosure mentioning the fireThursday night we were aroused from our slumbers by fire bells. Giffith's shop, Kinnard's shop, the post office and Roberson's store are in ruins.; former with doodling on stamps from recipient and latter with stamp corner nick, F.-V.F., this being one of two known on cover examples of the 1853 Little Rock Provisional date stamp.

2033     unlisted imageForest City, Vicksburg & Napoleon, U.S. Mail Packet. Red oval handstamp on cover to Elcho, La., lack of postage and postal markings suggests this cover contained a bill of lading and thus transmitted free of postage charge, Very Fine and rare.
Milgram No. unlisted; Estimate $200 - 300.

Napoleon was a major transfer point at the mouth of the Arkansas River. Much of the river transported mail from the northern half of Arkansas passed onto the Mississippi River at Napoleon.

The packet "Forest City", built in Brownsville, Pa. in 1851, is listed on the Vicksburg & Napoleon route (Star Route #8167) from August to December 1858 when the contract belonged to William Porterfield.

2037       imageCarrollton, Ark., May 6th. Manuscript postmark on legal size cover addressed to "Col. J.F. Snyder, Bolivar, Missouri", franked with manuscript canceled U.S. 1857, 1¢ blue, type V, horizontal strip of 6 (24), pencil 1861 year docketing on reverse; cover opening tear at top and right stamp with torn top corner, still Very Fine, Arkansas was an Independent State only for a short period between May 6th and May 17th of 1861.

A VERY RARE FIRST DAY ARKANSAS INDEPENDENT STATE USAGE AND UNIQUE MULTIPLE USAGE OF THE U.S. 1857 1¢ ISSUE.

The date of this cover is reaffirmed from existing correspondence to John F. Snyder. Dr. Snyder served with the 8th Division, Missouri State Guard (CSA) as the Assistant Division Surgeon. As a physician, his letters in peacetime would have been addressed to him with his M.D. honorific. Once the 8th Missouri was organized in 1861, he was addressed as "Colonel".

At midnight on May 31, 1861, the United States Post Office Department ceased mail operations in the Confederate States and prohibited further mail dispatch from the northern states into the Confederacy.
