Exceptional bold strike of olive green purser name-of-boat handstamp on 1820 folded letter carried by Ship Atlantic from Liverpool to Baltimore, arriving in New York City with red "New-York, Feb 19" cds and matching "Ship" straight line, light file folds, Very Fine and choice, Illustrated in Milgram.

ONE OF ONLY THREE RECORDED "SHIP ATLANTIC, W. MATLOCK" PURSER NAME-OF-BOAT HANDSTAMPS STRUCK IN OLIVE GREEN, ALL USED ON THIS SAILING ONLY.

By the 1820s American lines sailing regular schedules sprung up in many eastern U.S. ports. Intense competition for cargo and passengers was evident in newspaper advertisements. Name-of-ship markings provided additional advertising.

AN EXCEPTIONAL TRANSATLANTIC LETTER FROM TO THE UNITED STATES WITH THE BARING BROS. "ATLANTIC" STEAMER HANDSTAMP.

The U.S. Mail Packet "Atlantic" was the first steamer of the American Collins Line. The Boston Daily Journal for Sept. 3, 1850 says, "The Atlantic from Liverpool Aug. 21 reached New York Sept 1 in eleven days, two hours from dock to dock. The foreign mails by the steamer Atlantic, at New York, arrived in Boston Monday evening Sept. 2."

John D. Spreckels was owner of the Oceanic Steamship Company and son of Claus Spreckels. J.D. Spreckels and Brothers acted as general agents for Pacific visitors with "Splendid American Steamers" of the Oceanic Steamship Company that left San Francisco every four weeks bound for the "Milky Way of the Ocean" that included Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti and Rarotonga.

Baltimore, Care of United States Consul General, Panama, U.S. of Columbia", franked with 1890 15¢ Small Bank Note (defective) tied by Philadelphia duplex cancel, cover with central toned spot, overall Very Fine, Unlisted in Milgram.

The "Baltimore" was stationed off the coast of South America during the 1891 Chilean Civil War and was involved in what became known as "The Baltimore Crisis", a diplomatic incident between Chile and the United States. The crisis was sparked by the stabbing of two U.S. Navy sailors from the "U.S.S. Baltimore" outside the "True Blue Saloon" in Valparaíso on October 16, 1891. In response, the U.S. government demanded an apology. The crisis was resolved when Chile issued an apology and paid a $75,000 indemnity in gold.
