WITHOUT QUESTION - THIS IS THE FINEST KNOWN EXAMPLE OF THE RARE CLEVELAND O. PRINTED LOWER CASE TYPE "PAID" PRE-CANCEL.

There is limited information available about the lower-case "paid" and upper-case "PAID" precancels on the 1851 1¢ Issue. The Ashbrook book displays various examples of both confirmed and assumed precancel variations. Ashbrook suggests that these markings were likely produced using newspaper type, and it is highly probable that the overprinting occurred in a newspaper printing facility. These precancelled stamp were likely used on wrappers that enclosed newspapers. Ashbrook's theory was supported by the discovery of a wrapper containing The American Eagle of Cleveland, dated February 2, 1857.
