Grace, Morton, Puliafito, with 1991 P.F. and 2009 & 2020 P.S.E. certificates, the latter two Graded (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo, SMQ $1,500).

A REMARKABLE EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE V STAMP IN SUPERB CONDITION TRULY STANDS OUT. ONE OF THREE EXAMPLES TO RECEIVE THIS JUMBO GRADE WITH ONLY TWO EXAMPLES GRADING HIGHER (AT 98 AND 98J).

The 1857 1¢ Type V stamps are quite common and yet to find them in top-notch condition, particularly with a color cancel, proves to be a daunting task. The stamp featured here boasts exceptional visual allure, with its vibrant color, exquisite clear red grid cancel, generous and well-balanced margins, and overall Post Office freshness.

Plate 5 from the top row, large oversized margins with perfs well clear of design, wonderful deep rich color on fresh pristine paper, light New York town cancel, Extremely Fine, with 2002 P.F. & 2005 P.S.E. certificates, the latter Graded (XF 90, SMQ $725), which appears to deserve the Jumbo designation.

A WONDERFUL STAMP WHICH CLEARLY ILLUSTRATES THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THIS SCARCE TYPE.

Plate 5 was put into production for only a short period of time before being retired and replaced by Plates 7 and 8 initially, and later Plates 9 and 10. These stamps are very difficult to find and are greatly underappreciated.
