Cahaba, Alabama Pictorial Steamboat (Alabama River Route 7003). Red handstamp on incoming folded letter sheet with matching "5" rate handstamp, manuscript Isabella ship endorsement at bottom left; cover
light cleaned and silk reinforced on reverse, F.-V.F. appearance, a rare example of this illustrated steamboat marking of Cahaba, Alabama. Estimate; $300 - 400.
Contrary to regulations, the Cahaba postmaster used a pictorial
handstamp of a steamboat in lieu of the mandated "Steam" or "Steamboat". Three varieties are known, of which this is the earliest type.

The "Dr. Batey" of 281 tons built at Louisville Ky. in 1850, operating
management was under the control of the New Orleans Coast & Lafource Transportation Company. The Dr. Batey later became a Confederate Ironclad in 1861. (Image1)
