(Rarity IX).

Sent by David Neahr of Yuma, the freight contractor employed by the railroad constructor to bring materials from the port of Yuma to the rail head. Addressed to Lionel M. Jacob, President of the Pima County Bank.

Of approximately 70 covers and cards with some fronts and cuts, scarce to rare townmarks; with town postmarks including Blaisdell (2 of the 4 known), Castle Dome Landing type 1 (three known), Cibola registered, unique type 4 Dome, Ehrenberg, Fortuna with unlisted 1898 postmark, Harqua Hala, Kofa (three types), Mohawk and Palomas types, Parker and Vicksburg, Yuma with a nice range of postmark types and foreign usages, and many others; some duplication, condition varies with many nice strikes throughout, F.-V.F. overall.

805       imageCañon City, C.T., Aug 30th. Manuscript postmark with matching squiggle cancels 3¢ dull red (26) on yellow 1861 cover to Barnard Vt.; repaired lower left corner, Very Fine appearance, the earliest recorded postmark from Canon City, the Jarrett listing example, ex-Bauer.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

At the entrance to the Royal Gorge of the Arkansas, Canon City became a transportation and supply center for the surrounding territory. It was the only post office in that part of Utah Territory which became part of Colorado. This office was established in Kansas Territory December 13, 1860 and transferred to Colorado Territory in 1861.

Julesburg was an important stop on the Central Overland California & Pike's Peak Express (COC & PPE) route in Colorado and the subsequent transcontinental pony express route. Ironically, the town was named after the outlaw Jules Beni who was notorious for stealing horses from the COC & PPE.

Webster, Musick & Cuniffe corner card cover to Trinidad, franked with manuscript canceled 3¢ Banknote grilled, with original billhead enclosure, with additional corner card 3¢ pink entire from correspondence canceled by light cds and two enclosures confirming Webster, Musick & Cuniffe acted as forwarding agents, also a third different merchant corner card cover with manuscript canceled 3¢ Banknote and no postmark; some cover soiling, F.-V.F., a rare group showing unusual postmarks from Kit Carson.

A VERY RARE USAGE OF THE WEBSTER, MUSICK & CUNIFFE/KIT CARSON CORNER CARD AS A POSTMARK.

The town name formed part of the printed corner card of the Webster, Musick & Cuniffe, who also where proprietors of the Overland Transit Co. at this time. The postmaster simply added the date in manuscript. This company operated as express and forwarding merchants to such places as Trinidad, Pueblo and Santa Fe. A stunning and important usage.

In 1853, the DLO established new procedures for valuable dead letter. The handstamped "P" identified valuable enclosure ($1) and ledger where surname (Peterson) in DLO file November 9, 1853.
