Russell, in the Bay of Islands at the northern semi-tropical area of the North Island, was the first major settlement and used by whaling ships from a number of countries before New Zealand became a colony of Great Britain. This cover pays the newly established rate of 1 shilling via San Francisco to the whaling port of Edgartown, on the third of 13 sailings intended to take advantage of the Trans-Continental Railway. It traveled on the "Wonga Wonga" to Honolulu and continued on the "Ajax". It is the only known example that paid the rate solely with 2d stamps.

Scott No. 36.
SG No. 122; Estimate $750 - 1,000.

Mail to the United States did not often use the more expensive route via Marseilles. The following years the route via San Francisco and the Trans-Continental Railroad made the route via Marseilles even less desirable as it was much slower.

SG No. 125; Estimate $300 - 400.

The rate from New Zealand to England via Marseilles increased to 10d in 1865. The sender overpaid this rate by 2d, probably not knowing that the 1851 rate of 2d for each ½oz. to Sydney did not apply to this new rate.
