Russell, in the Bay of Islands at the northern semi-tropical area of
the North Island, was the first major settlement and used by whaling ships from a number of countries before New Zealand became a colony of Great Britain. This cover pays the newly established rate of 1 shilling via San Francisco to the whaling port
of Edgartown, on the third of 13 sailings intended to take advantage of the Trans-Continental Railway. It traveled on the "Wonga Wonga" to Honolulu and continued on the "Ajax". It is the only known example that paid the rate solely with 2d stamps.
