Countess, cover handed to C.C. Dwight, Federal Agent of Exchange to be put in the U.S. mail, manuscript endorsement "Examined Chas. L. Wurzbach, Lt. & ADC" (for Gen. H.W. Hawes) on reverse, postmarked "New Orleans, La. Jan. 17, '65" double circle with straight line "Drop Letter" and "Due 4" in circle (penalty unpaid drop), usual small cover flaws as almost always found on adversity covers, Very Fine.

ONLY CIVILIAN "FLAG OF TRUCE" FOR THIS ROUTE AND A RARE COVER ORIGINATING IN TEXAS.

The manuscript examined marking on the reverse is that of Charles L. Wurzbach who was the Aide-de-Camp to General H.W. Hawes in command of the Defense of Galveston. The cover addressed to Wesley B. Ogden, a New York lawyer who moved to Lavaca in 1849. A strong Union man, he came to New Orleans in 1863, returning to Texas after the war. (Image1) (Image2)
