704       image"Boston Post Office and the Development of Machine Cancellation", 1876-1920's. Body of 7 frame award winning exhibition cover collection displayed, identified and neatly written-up on exhibition pages; with approximately 200 covers and cards spanning from the first 1876 experimental Leavitt machine to the American Postal Machine flag cancellations through to the 1920's, with overview and highlights including the Leavitt Machine 1876 double cork killer cancel, 2nd machine and type A-E duplexes including an EKU, various pin puncture usages, American Postal Machines Co. including one of six known first class usages during 1884 (only one machine in use during this period) and an EKU for any American Postal Machine, rimless dial cancels, F.G. Floyd cover, rare drilled killer variety prior to number insert (only recorded) and early small 1 killer (five recorded), two examples of the later black ball killer (only a few known), earliest lettered machine cancel (only recorded), extensive showing of Flag cancels from 1894 on showing various stations, dial variants, ovate dies, machine 1 chronology, dial errors, involute flags, test cancels, etc.; a wonderful showing of machine cancel with some better items removed from exhibit (see Boston machines in single section).

The Philadelphia Post Office was one of many cities who used a special "Dead" handstamp for the return of DLO mail. In this instance, they ignored P.O. regulations (Laws & Regs 1855 - Sec. 132) and used the handstamp as a canceller.
