1851 5¢-12¢ Issues
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
2125 o    12 image1856, 5¢ red brown. Light "New Orleans" cds postmark, four enormous even margins with deep, rich color and sharp early impression, an Extremely Fine gem, with 1963 and 1998 P.F. certificates.
Scott No. 12; $775.

ONE OF THE FINEST USED EXAMPLES WE HAVE EVER OFFERED OF THE 1856 5¢ RED BROWN.

This is a notoriously difficult stamp to find in this choice condition as most examples are cut in or touched. When a four margin example is found, more often than not, the margins have been cut at an angle and do not have this wonderful "boxed" appearance.

Carried by the British packet Niagara, which departed New York December 3, 1856, this is a late example of the "French Decree" rate. On January 1, 1857 the French due rate dropped from 13 decimes to 8 decimes (the so-called "Three Months" rate, which was in effect only until April first).
