Pioche, now a virtual ghost town, was situated about 180 miles northeast of Las Vegas at an elevation of over 6000 feet. It was known for its gunfights and lawlessness. This cover was carried by Wells Fargo stage across the Sierras to Cathey's Valley, Cal.

Large format yellow C.O.D. labels were used from the late 1850s in conjunction with town labels. Their large size meant they were sometimes wrapped around the envelope so as not to obscure address.
