Alcock and Brown had won the prize, but the giant plane was finally ready to go on July 4th, and the crew decided to try for New York out of Harbour Grace. Unfortunately, an oil leak forced them down at Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. After extensive repairs they completed the flight but no mail was carried across the Atlantic on the Mauretania. (Image1)

On June 14, 1919, four days after Lt. Brown's letter to his mother, Captain Alcock and Brown took off from St. John's in the Vickers-Vimy. Sixteen hours later they arrived in Clifden, Ireland. They had completed the first non-stop Atlantic crossing by a "heavier-than-air machine", thus winning £10,000 Daily New prize. The $1 stamp franked 196 letters carried. (Image1)

ONE OF 20 RECORDED SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL USES SENT JULY 12, 1919 FOR THE SECOND ATTEMPT OF THE MARTINSYDE.

The $1 stamps were also used on 25 pieces of supplementary mail postmarked July 12, 1919 for a second attempt of the Martinsyde. The plane wrecked on takeoff. Its pilot turned over the mail to London officials in January 1920. Covers are backstamped 7 JA 20. A. (Image1)

The Newfoundland government overprinted 300 copies of the 36¢ "Caribou" issue for use on this flight. Only 100 were actually used: 65 from St. John's and 35 from Harbour Grace. After flying 2,650 miles, the plane was forced down at Tresco Island, off the coast of England. The "Columbia" was able to finish the flight, landing at Croydon Airport on October 13. (Image1)

ONE OF ONLY 65 FLIGHT COVERS FROM ST. JOHN'S WITH THE 50¢ ON 30¢ SURCHARGE COLUMBIA FLIGHT ISSUE.

On October 9, 1930, a U.S. Navy crew of two left Harbour Grace in the Miss Columbia, refueled on Tresco Island (England) and arrived in Croydon on the 11th. 65 covers were postmarked at St. John's and 35 at Harbour Grace. The consignor has documented a total of 34 covers from St. John's and 16 from Harbour Grace. (Image1)

The giant Dornier DO-X flying boat (which could carry up to 170 passengers) did not find a buyer in the U.S., so it was decided to fly it back to Germany in 1932 via Newfoundland and the Azores. 8,000 of the watermarked version of the $1 air mail (which traced the Alcock-Brown flight's route) were surcharged $1.50. The successful 1932 flight demonstrated the great advances made in just 13 years since Alcock-Brown. Use of the underlying stamp with its reference to their pioneering effort. (Image1)
