'Gripholm' at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; censor tape at left and purple censor handstamp; cover opening tears at right and some censor tape residue at left, Fine and interesting use.

From 1942 to 1946, the United States Department of State chartered Gripsholm as an exchange and repatriation ship, carrying Japanese and German nationals to exchange points where she then picked up US and Canadian citizens (and British married to Americans or Canadians) to bring home to the USA and Canada. This was the third voyage of a total of 12 round trips made by the S.S. "Gripsholm", carrying a total of 27,712 repatriates. Miss Grimmestad was in charge of the American Red Cross nurses for the 1943 exchange.
