Sharp two-line handstamp (unrecorded in Yag Bash) on 1827 folded letter to to Veracruz, with endorsement on cover asking forwarder there to send letter Bordeos, Spain, manuscript "6" rate, Very Fine, this may be the earliest known handstamp marking from Mazatlan as the earliest recorded by Yag and Bash is 1838.

2068       imageMexico, (Mazatlan) Mazatlan. Fancy wreathed "Franco" (Schatzkes 740) on 1866 French Intervention "Sello Negro" folded letter sheet to San Francisco, manuscript "SS John L. Stephens" ship endorsement and "San Francisco, Cal., 10, Mar 22" cds, Very Fine and choice, illustrated in Pietsch Imperial Eagles of Mexico 1864-66 (page 203), ex-Schimmer.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

On its return voyage, the steamer "John L. Stephens" was seized by Republicans at Cabo San Lucas, Baja California on April 6, 1866 for carrying arms to the French in Mazatlan. Capture of this American ship was a diplomatic problem because the U. S. government had recognized the Republican Juarez government and the American ship Stephens was caught supporting the unrecognized French government. Eagle stamps could not be used because the Maximilian government was not recognized.

Folded letter to Durango docketed from Mazatlan in 1847, carried out-of-the-mails and posted with red straight line "V S Sebastian" postmark (YB GD221), manuscript and red handstamp "2" reales rate marks, Very Fine, San Sebastian is closer to Durango but still at the bottom of the mountain range, signed Bash.

2070       imageMexico, (Mazatlan) Mazatlan (Presidio De). Red straight line postmark (YB MZ1) with matching large 2 rate handstamp on fresh folded letter to Durango, letter datelined "Presidio De Mazatlan, Julio 6, 1851", Extremely Fine, this mark was though to be from the Port (Puerto) of Mazatlan but this letter shows it was from the old Spanish Presidio, 20.8 miles east of the port, the town is now called Villa Union.

Red two-line postmark (YB unlisted) on 1837 folded letter addressed to US Consul Burrough in Vera Cruz, with additional "Octubre 12" date stamp below, manuscript "4" reales rate on reverse, docketed in Mazatlan, this letter went out of the mail to Rosario located on the main route to Mexico City, F.-V.F., a rare unlisted mark, Burrough was the most important US diplomat in Mexico at that time.

Purple straight line handstamp on U.S. 1884, 2¢ brown entire to Mazatlan, with matching fancy circular "Franco" handstamp, reverse with purple "Thomas Bell & Co., San Francisco, Nov. 21, 1887" handstamp, Very Fine and rare, Thomas Bell was a wealthy investor in the New Almaden mine (a cinnabar - mercury mine). He owned a mansion at Bush & Octavia streets in San Francisco.

2076     155+156+158 imageMexico, Vapor Newbern, Agente De Correos. Purple oval handstamp (Schimmer maritime 30, rarity 9) tying 1885, Hidalgo Profile, 6c + 10c + 20c on Mazatlan corner card cover to Paris, France, the cover boarded in Mazatlan and discharged in Guaymas with "Franco Guaymas Jul 16 1885" octagon date stamp on reverse (Schimmer Son 35/4), then by rail with Benson, Ariz. and New York transits. Paris receiver; 20c with pre-use corner nick, otherwise Very Fine, beautiful examples of this rare Newbern ship cancel, a wonderful showpiece.

Charpenter, Renaud Co was an importer of European goods sold retail in Mazatlan. The Newbern was associated with silver smuggling into the USA which had a high tariff on silver. It foundered on rocks at Pt Fermin, San Pedro, California and sank in 1893 with $250,000 in cargo, mostly silver, aboard.

Manuscript endorsement with "via Colima" routing on cover to Ciudad Guzman, franked with grid canceled 1886, 10c Numeral, red "Mazatlan, Set 18, 1888, Sinaloa Mexico" origin postmark (Schimmer Sin 287) and Manzanillo transit, traveled inland through Colima to Ciudad Guzman; partial backflap and stamp corner nick, otherwise Very Fine, the sea routing would have been preferable to overland during the September rainy season when some rivers may not be crossable, a fine maritime mail example with interesting routing, ex-Whitehead, Schimmer.

2081       imageMexico, 1865 French Expeditionary Forces. French military engineer officer cover from Mazatlan to Strasbourg, France, endorsed "Voie du Panama", but first sent on northbound ship to San Francisco (18 Apr 1865) with "30" rate handstamp (under March 3, 1847 act all letters to and from Panama 30 cents) "New York, 18, May 6" cds for carriage up eastern seaboard, reverse with French receiver and docketed "Mazatlan" in pencil on reverse, Very Fine, This is the only known letter from this French Officer from Mazatlan using the public mail system, his correspondence from various French held places is well known, ex-Schimmer.
Estimate; $600 - 800.

No stamps were used because the Maximilian government and its stamps were not recognized by the United States and this letter was going there on its way to France.
