MAIL CHELMSFORD TO USA WITH 'SHIP' AND 'LANCASTER' HAND STAMPS. A very fine and well known entire (ex Robertson and illustrated within his book) from Broomfield near Chelmsford initially to 'Thomas Thomson, Chemist and Druggist Liverpool' and then
sent on to 'Micajah Speakman, Concord, Dellaware, Pennsylvania North America' with various postal charges. On front good strike CHELMSFORD/29 mileage mark, overstruck straight line 'SHIP' hand stamp and just below London PAID date stamp 21 JY 1819.
Also on front superb strike 'SHIP' hand stamp in red, difference to other 'SHIP' hand stamp and underneath superb strike 'LANCASTER' straight line hand stamp in black. There is much conjecture, including by Robertson, as to the source of the
'LANCASTER' hand stamp, Lancashire? a ship's name? or a place in the US. Very fine and rare usage. (Ref 121637).

On front very fine strike of the circular 'PENNY POST NOT PAID/W' hand stamp in black (L394) which was struck on unpaid letters transferred from the General Post to the Penny Post, indicating that the Penny Post charge had not been paid and had to be
collected. Each of the five Penny Post Offices had a hand stamp, 'W' signified Westminster Office. On reverse two fine to very fine strikes London Bishop marks '28/JA' and '29/JA'. Superb and rare usage. (Ref 125750).
