Sr Edward Nicholas, Knt Cm (Commander) of his Majesty's most honble privy Council at Weft Horfley Place', also endorsed 'To be left with the Poft Mafter at Staines' and 'post-paid'. Superb early mail from a Wiltshire village. (Ref 131266).

Fine entire Salisbury to "William Hilyar Esqr Coker Somersetshire" dated 8 Novr 1782, on reverse superb strike of the rare "SHERBORNE/Poft Office" distinctive circular hand stamp (DT505) in black. On reverse good strike SALISBURY straight line hand stamp in black, 52 x 5, unrecorded in county catalogue. Very unusual usage as the Sherborne hand stamp is usually accompanied with a Taunton hand stamp rather than Salisbury. (Ref 110977).

Stamps show fine plate wear, SE corner fault. On reverse London date stamp 18 MR 1855 and 'HEXHAM' date stamp. (Ref 131471).

A very fine and clean mourning envelope, circa 1880 written by Princess Beatrice, 5th daughter of Queen Victoria and addressed to 'Her Royal Highnefs, The Princefs Louise the Duchefs of Argyll, Kensington Palace, London' and endorsed at lower left 'The Queen' all in the hand of Princess Beatrice. At this time Princess Beatrice acted as Private Secretary to the Queen and signed on her behalf. On reverse 'CROWN/V R' crest on flap and fine Royal wax seal. (Ref 132711).

369 image1819 MAIL CHELMSFORD TO USA WITH 'SHIP' AND 'LANCASTER' HAND STAMPS. A very fine and well known entire (ex Robertson and illustrated within his book) from Broomfield near Chelmsford initially to 'Thomas Thomson, Chemist and Druggist Liverpool' and then sent on to 'Micajah Speakman, Concord, Dellaware, Pennsylvania North America' with various postal charges. On front good strike CHELMSFORD/29 mileage mark, overstruck straight line 'SHIP' hand stamp and just below London PAID date stamp 21 JY 1819. Also on front superb strike 'SHIP' hand stamp in red, difference to other 'SHIP' hand stamp and underneath superb strike 'LANCASTER' straight line hand stamp in black. There is much conjecture, including by Robertson, as to the source of the 'LANCASTER' hand stamp, Lancashire? a ship's name? or a place in the US. Very fine and rare usage. (Ref 121637).

Part wrapper sent free mail 'To the Lady Leighton in Little Russell Steet, near Bloomsbury Square, London', at lower left 'Free' and signed 'Corbet' with postal charge of '8' deleted. On reverse very fine strike of the small and distinctive 'SALOP' straight line hand stamp in black (17 x 4)(SH569b) and alongside fine strike London Bishop mark '3/NO'. Part wrapper undated but this rare hand stamp only recorded 19th August 1717 until 7th November 1718. All British provincial hand stamps pre 1840 are very rare and very sought after. (Ref 132873).

375 image1838 GREAT WESTERN FIRST VOYAGE US TO THE UK. Fine wrapper from New York to Rothschilds of London and endorsed "pr Great Western". On reverse manuscript notation 7 May 1838 from Prince Ward and King, on front charged "3/-" and good strike of the "BRISTOL/SHIP-LETTER" step type hand stamp in black. The Great Western left New York for the first time on the 7th May 1838, arriving Bristol 22nd May 1838 and this wrapper was carried aboard this sailing. On reverse London date stamp 23 MY 1838. A superb and rare transatlantic usage. (Ref 116416).

A fine letter from London dated 19th June 1671 'These ffor mr William Blathwaite at Sr William Temple's, His Matie of Great Brittain, Embafsador at the Hague', sent free of charge under franking privilege and on reverse very fine strike of the very rare London '3/Off' General Post Office receiving house mark (L65b) of which very few examples are known. The letter relates to bringing some family members back to England. One of the earliest overseas free franks believed to exist. (Ref 123759).

381 image1779 MAIL CRUTCHED FRIARS (CITY OF LONDON) TO GROSVENOR SQUARE WITH LONDON 'PENNY POST NOT PAID/W' HAND STAMP (L394). Fine entire from Crutched Friars dated 28th Jan 1779 to 'Gideon Johnstone Esqr. at John Johnstone's Esqr. Park Street, Grosvenor Square'. On front very fine strike of the circular 'PENNY POST NOT PAID/W' hand stamp in black (L394) which was struck on unpaid letters transferred from the General Post to the Penny Post, indicating that the Penny Post charge had not been paid and had to be collected. Each of the five Penny Post Offices had a hand stamp, 'W' signified Westminster Office. On reverse two fine to very fine strikes London Bishop marks '28/JA' and '29/JA'. Superb and rare usage. A very fine entire written and posted at the House of Commons to Hamburg dated July 29 1853, post paid '8d' and on reverse wax seal 'LIBRARY HOUSE OF COMMONS'. Also on reverse superb strike of the extremely rare 'HOUSE-OF-COMMONS' udc in black, apparently only one other example of this hand stamp has been recorded in red on an 1846 wrapper to Corfu. On reverse fine strike Temple Office Dockwra type 3a (L357)(PAYD on left) and within 'T/SA'. Small fault at foot but an attractive and rare early usage of this hand stamp which is recorded from 1702.
