759 image1961 Tristan Relief Fund surcharge set of four tied to a large brown folded envelope to Denmark with original letter in Danish enclosed. Set tied by ST HELENA / C / OC 18 / 61 cds cancels, some wrinkles or bends, stamps are very fine sent AIRMAIL by K G Mork, Island of St Helena, South Atlantic Ocean. Rarely seen as commercial cover, most are unaddressed philatelic envelopes . Only 434 sets were produced to raise funds for the Tristan Da Cunha volcano disaster of 10th October 1961 where all of the 264 occupants of Tristan Da Cunha were evacuated firstly to Nightingale Island then onwards to Southampton returning by November 1963 to their Island. The Relief Fund was established by the Governor of St Helena who allowed the overprinting of the stamps to raise funds for those affected. However, Whitehall got wind of this and closed it down on the 19th October. So these were only available for 7 days, the remainder being burnt. Rare! SG 172/175.
