921 image1817 Interesting and faulty Entire Letter of several pages from Nanjemoy Maryland to John Blair, Writer of the Signet Edinburgh (prestigious solicitors appointed to use the Kings private seal for documents). Well travelled letter with manuscript 1½oz, and charge mark 7/11 with LIVERPOOL / SHIP LETTER framed h/s in black along with Liverpool arrival cds in red JUL / B / M, and ADD ½ part cancel for conveying to Edinburgh. Contents are written by J. Roberston describing his marriage to a wealthy woman in Maryland who's uncle was secretary to General George Washington (former president), and explains how he was captured by a French Privateer with his ship and good stolen at a cost of $39,000 and $14,000 of cargo. As a wealthy merchant chipping captain he was now destitute in San Domingo waiting for passage by the US Navy to get back to the USA. This a letter to the highest Scottish courts to claim restitution of his stolen fortunes and pursuing the estate of his wife that he wishes to inherit but her cousin is not allowing him any access to this. Most interesting. Rough transcription included. Very poor condition but the letter is mostly legible.
