20th April 1937 – the 48th birthday of Adolf Hitler It was for the first time that a birthday of the “Führer“ was honored by four commemorative stamps showing the portrait. All four small sized stamps show the same motif and the same face
value. They were issued as a souvenir sheet with broad white margins in April 1937. Initially it was planned to produce the souvenir sheet in an upright format. This seemed to be reasonable due to the format of the stamps. The change to the
horizontal format was due to the following reason: Adolf Hitler`s quotation “Wer ein Volk retten will kann nur heroisch denken“ (“Whoever wants to save a nation can only think in heroic terms“) could more easily be illustrated in the final horizontal
format. More information and historical background can be found in vol. 1 of „Thema 3.Reich“ (p.219-20), light quality restrictions, certificate Schlegel BPP.

Adolf Hitler`s 55th birthday was the last birthday which was honored by a commemorative stamp. Following the draft of Gottfried Klein the large sized stamp was issued on April 20, 1945. Hitler demanded that after his 55th birthday no

The final drawing shown here has been marked in manuscript as “II. Entwurf“ (2nd draft). The presentation of the picture was generally accepted but some modifications had to be done. These are the three most essential ones: 1.The digits
of the face value appeared too clumsy and were newly designed. 2.The area of the collar was significantly modified 3.The positions of the “eagle with swastika“ were exchanged. (Image)

Essay |

After 20th April 1944, all artists who were engaged in the conceptional designing of postage stamps were informed by the ministry of propaganda that on demand of the “Führer“ no motif should show his head portrait anymore. Consequently,
Gottfried Klein delivered the draft for a special issue commemorating the day of the “Machtergreifung“ (seizure of power) 1945. For this purpose he used the frame of the 1944 birthday stamp. The “Führer`s“ head was replaced by the portrait of the
eagle with a swastika behind. This motif origined from the back of an Adolf Hitler medal of the year of 1938. This draft, executed as a silver point drawing is unique.

This wonderful phase print on baryte paper is the only printing proof of the brown ribbon stamp 1938 in existence. It comes from the estate of Richard Rackelmann. Rackelmann was engraver at the “Reichsdruckerei“ of Berlin. He made quite a
number of original dies for postage stamps which were made by gravure printing. Baryte paper bears a special mineral layer. This layer enables extremely fine prints from the engraved die to be made. A precious historical gem. (Image)
