5797 imageDas legendäre "Hessheimer" Buch Ludwig Hessheimer wurde 1872 in Kronstadt geboren. Die Familie zog 1878 nach Triest. Wie er selber in seinen Erinnerungen schrieb, entdeckte er dort mit 5 Jahren sein Interesse für Briefmarken, welches sich zu einer großen Leidenschaft entwickelte. Auf Wunsch der Eltern begann er in der k.u.k. Armee eine Offizierslaufbahn. Ab 1909 war es ihm möglich, eine künstlerische Ausbildung an der Akademie der Bildenen Künste in Wien zu beginnen. Nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg beendete er seine militärische Laufbahn und arbeitete fortan in Wien als Berufskünstler. Er zeichnete auch einige Entwürfe für die Post in Österreich, die jedoch nicht angenommen wurden. 1930 erschienen schließlich in Island die ersten von ihm entworfenen Briefmarken - eine Serie von 16 Werten zum 1000jähringen Besten des Parlaments "Althing" (isl. Alþingi). Dokumentiert ist die Entstehung der Ausgabe in sicher einem der schönsten Bücher der Philatelie. Auf 49 Seiten sind über 300 Essays, Proben und Druckphasen eindrucksvoll präsentiert. Von den damals angefertigten 100 Exemplaren sind nur ganz wenige erhalten geblieben. Aufgrund des wertvollen Inhalts wurden viele Bücher, die nicht durch den Krieg verloren gegangen sind, aufgelöst. Hessheimer wanderte übrigens 1950 nach Brasilien aus, wo er 1956 verstarb.
