415 c imageVirgil Brand was a one of history’s greatest coin collectors in the early 1900’s. Brand died in 1926 and his heirs sold the collection of over 300,000 coins through various auctions in the 1980’s. Also, in the 1980’s, the family sold thousands of covers addressed to Brand’s Chicago brewing company to a stamp and coin dealer in Ohio. These had been accumulated at Brand’s direction by his secretary and stored for nearly 100 years. After weeding out the plain and the common, what remains is offered here: two or three thousand late 19th and early 20th century advertising covers and illustrated corner covers from businesses or organizations doing business with the Brand Brewing Company. Most are naturally brewing related and neatly opened, but there is duplication – sometimes extensive. The photos show a sample of what to expect but an in-person viewing would help to get a better handle on this one. 420 c imageBoone County in Illinois. Memorable overview of everyday life in rural and urban areas in northern Illinois through postcards and covers. Special emphasis on material to and from Belvidere, Rockford, and Caledonia. Consists of around four hundred fifty items, including picture postcards, postal stationery, and trade cards, along with stampless and stamped covers. Mixed condition, with occasional instances of wear and tear, staining, and minor damage. The postcards, produced in various printing and design styles, depict town squares, parades, small businesses, family life, bucolic settings, public transportation, banking and commerce, and advertising. The covers feature plenty of usages and frankings from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, with examples of fancy cancels, postmarks from short-lived communities, auxiliary markings, corner cards, and DPOs. Contains two reference works on Boone County. Should be of great interest to students of Midwestern history and collectors of topical covers and cards related to Americana.
